New Chickie Mama. Iv got 4 day old chicks.

Typically at 2 weeks old, and I feed apples, cucumbers, and melon rinds as treats.

    1 week old baby chick

Yes. Chickens are flock animals, and having another chick will also help them not be singled out when introducing to the other birds.

any chickens ever do something surprising? interesting? funny?

I’ve always wanted a silkie. They are supposedly good broodies, and my grandma had a silkie rooster, before she moved to a city where chickens weren’t allowed. (She still has two “emotional support birds” lol 😆) the rooster was called Gandalf, because if you got too close to his favorite hen...

good message. I hatch my own chicks usually (rural king once sold me 6 sick chicks. only 2 survived, then one randomly got ate by a fox. so they basically sold me four dead birds.) I just don't trust large corporate farms or retailers anymore.

any chickens ever do something surprising? interesting? funny?

so recently, I had 2 chickens (one Rhode Island Red, one Australorp) go broody in the same nest. they had one chick, and seemed to take care of it together. unfortunately, a wild fox kept eating my younger birds, so I put Starlight (the only child) in a brooder with 11 other chicks, for safety...

    TSC Problems and Ranting

I think it was the local Rural King, but I once went to a feed store with 11 chicks in a brooder. 10 chicks were in alright shape...... running circles around their obviously dead sibling!!!! same store that sold my nana 6 chicks, 4 of whom died within a couple of days. (one was also...

Quail breed identification and temperament differences

I think I heard one of my celadon crowing…….. the nearest place to get quail pullets is an hour away, so I’m going to monitor them for now…… if I do have another rooster though, I’m going to sell him.

    How to sell them?

Oh never mind. I was just looking for some local silkie chicks, they don’t always have them at tractor supply.

I was given three Rhode Island Red “Hens” one looks different. Is “she” a RIR?

My hatchery Rhode Island hens lay slightly darker eggs! It all depends on the country and hatchery they come from, but they look like the right breed.

    Strange Rooster Behavior

I have a beautiful Plymouth Barred Rock, he keeps to himself, rarely (but not never) goes after people…….. aaaaaand then I’ve got Rainbow, the half grown Rhode Island Red, who rips feathers out of his two ladies (used to have more, but a fox came through a while back, and ate 14 birds), and he...

    Blu-Kote Warning

edit: read that 1% betadine can be used on small birds, and to avoid creams because the oil messes with their feathers.
