    Separating babies from Mom

He is not, however, welcoming to a wandering dog coyote or raccoon ect. LGDs just know. My husband has never been a dog person. He's given chickens a go a few times and has always had bad predator problems. Till I moved in with Oz. Had to put hardwood floors down so he could be happy about it on...

    Separating babies from Mom

Our last squirrel wilded up well. Disappeared into the woods. Months went by. When she was done and wanted to get out from under her grown babies she brought them to our yard, hung out for a day and a half then promptly dumped them on us. My husband is currently trying to parent them out of...

    Separating babies from Mom

He's pretty serious about his bebes... 🤣 He looks out for the horse and alpacas next door too... Also our cat has access. She's over baby squirrel's and chicks at this point because she knows they're family. But you let a mouse or lizard squeeze under the door and it's game on... I've got the...

    Separating babies from Mom

I did remove them during the daytime. It's just not safe out there and that huge black snake is definitely out and about during the day. The porch is absolutely safe (snake proof too). I've raised all my chicks there. And my squirrels (I do wildlife rehab) Not only is it screened in but it's...

    Separating babies from Mom

Everybody was so upset I couldn't split them up. I just felt like every hour they were out there was more likely I was going to go out and have a lesser head count. I'll wait till it's dark tonight to do the split lol she's much happier on the screen porch though. She can see and hear the other...

    Separating babies from Mom

Well that didn't go as planned. By the time I had caught two mom turned into a prize gamecock on me and they were squeezing through the chicken wire. Finally had to put her in the pet taxi and let them go through the holes in the front to get to her. But they're safe on the screen porch for...

    Separating babies from Mom

I think it's hilarious when they say cemani's lay 80 to 120 eggs a year. She lays almost daily. I'd say average of 6 a week. She's WELL over 120 this year already! She's no joke!

I definitely will! When I found her sitting on that nest there must have been 18 of her eggs in there. By the time they hatched she was down to 11 and 9 hatched. We saw this guy 4 days before hatch. Bet he's the culprit. We've reinforced that coop the best we could but it's not worth any extra...

    Separating babies from Mom

Excellent! Thank you for the help! I kind of felt like all at once was best but it's the first time I've ever done it and I was thinking that could be the worst way to do it, I should probably ask someone who knows 🤣

Or a temporary bachelor pad when we have roosters to take care of... Because my husband tends to procrastinate🤣

That's what I'll do then! I'd also like to move her and the rest. The reason we abandoned that coop is because it's on our upper deck behind my husband's shop. Our yard coops are much better covered by our LGD. That's snake territory out there.

    Separating babies from Mom

She just turned 1 and is being an amazing mama though! Luckily she chose to stash her secret away in the old coop we don't use anymore 🤣 because we keep the nest box hay under it. All I had to do is close the door. They are just 24 hours old. Some of them not even quite. She's already taught...

    Separating babies from Mom

I don't mind doing that, I've hatched plenty of my own this is just the first time I've let a hen do it. My main priority is the least stress on mom and babies. I have no idea if sooner or later is better?

    Separating babies from Mom

Actually the only day she can't take them is today because she's in the hospital having her baby. But her husband deals with this stuff anyway. But he'll be there too. So if earlier is better I'll probably take them tonight and put them in my brooder till tomorrow. If y'all think it would be...

    Separating babies from Mom

I just didn't know if it would be more stressful the more bonded they became or more stressful the closer to hatching. I was even prepared to put them in my brooder if it was better to take them early because I definitely need them to go. Luckily it didn't come to that because she's ready to...
