I would keep your chickens in a covered run, enclosed so no wild birds can enter (covered on top so wild birds' poop can't land in there). Free roaming your chickens really ups their chances of getting sick right now. DEFINITELY don't wear your feed store shoes anywhere NEAR where the chickens...
Thanks you so much for mentioning it but I am realizing this is turning out to be more complicated than I hoped. I think I will keep a close eye on Cordelia and if she seems to be suffering move her inside the house again this winter, and get a couple of chicks for her this spring.
Good luck...
Hinotari, do you would think a couple of your hens would make friends with a larger bird? I have a mobility-challenged black copper maran who needs some friends, but just read that silkies stick to themselves, what do you think? I'm looking specifically for friends for her.
Hi Hinotori, I was just over on the Washington thread, talking about getting some Silkies. I am new to the breed, do you mind if I ask you some questions?
Okay thanks for the advice! Do silkies get skittish if you don't handle them a lot? What might happen if you don't?
I know it's kind of a crap-shoot. It depends on the individual a lot. Of my 4 black copper marans one was my bossiest, one my most skittish and least friendly, one my most...
You know I was originally thinking of bantam cochins! Am a huge fan of all that fluffiness. But then I thought maybe they would prefer to roost, not sleep with Cordelia. What do you think? Also in your experience are they flighty/skittish? Looking for friendly but also calm, cool and collected...
That is so sweet, I love it!
Yes, thinking of doing something similar. Deep bedding for sure! Probably infared heat bulb as well. Got one that is for reptiles and supposed to be fire safe.
Have to admit this crossed by mind! Dear Hubs doesn't think we need anymore chickens but....
Hello, any Silkie breeders in Whatcom, Skagit, or Snohomish counties? Looking for two healthy, adult, friendly hens. Temperament and health more important than conformation or age. Thanks!
Hi! Thanks for your reply, sounds like you have a great set up.
We have kind of done the same thing. Our hen house is pretty big so we cordoned off almost half with wire mesh. When the chickens are inside she can see and hear them, but not really interact, you know? I set up her own run, also...
Hello, Peeps! Need an opinion on providing companionship for my mobility-challenged chicken.
Cordelia is a Black Copper Maran, can walk and even run if she's really motivated, but with difficulty and doesn't do it very often, or quickly. She doesn't roost. The vet says there is nothing we can...
"I do sell eggs, chicks, and juveniles and sometimes point of lay and laying birds.
Let me know if you're interested."
Don't tempt me! Maxed out right now but if I ever want to replace my Roo I might just have to buy one of your CL's. He's gorgeous!
"And here's Nugget being returned to us...

Anyone want to make a guess at Monique's breed?
