Chicks from my own eggs are consistently dying at hatch

Thank you so much for your thoughts. I was wondering myself if it was a nutritional thing. I have been giving them a starter/grower but I did change brands since the last three years - when my hatches went fine. Worth a try to experiment!! Thanks!!

Chicks from my own eggs are consistently dying at hatch

Okay; thanks for replying and thank you for your thoughts. I will look back to my notes about which hens’ eggs didn’t work out to see if there’s a pattern, but I think it was a mix. One rooster. Fertility is near 100% Hens are around a year old. I am just thinking there could be some...

Chicks from my own eggs are consistently dying at hatch

What is going on??? I have been hatching my own eggs for a few years. No issues. This year, despite fertility being almost 100%, and using three different incubators, I’m getting a 25% hatch (and survive) rate. Those that do survive appear perfectly normal. Embryos are dying within a few...

Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Ameraucana but I’m also trying with a barred rock X Ameraucana for the egg size element. Hard to get legit blue plus XL size. But I will keep trying. I know nothing about genetics.

Herniated Chick needs help! (graphic photo)

The little hernia chick is doing well. Running around and busy with everyone else. 4 days old: It’s 6 days old now and still busy. It looks a bit weird to me compared to its hatchmates. Missing bum fluff or something else? Its little hernia stump is still there with the tourniquet elastic on...

Herniated Chick needs help! (graphic photo)

Hey, you’re nice to ask! Still alive and quite plucky. I tied off the tissue and severed it. I kept her separate for a while until what was left had shrunk enough that it wasn’t so visible to the other chicks. Her fluff never fluffed beyond her head. The only other chick I had that happen with...

Herniated Chick needs help! (graphic photo)

But if I tie it off and severe and there are intestines in it, that would be quite painful no?

I just want to make sure I’ve got it right though, what I’m doing. Is tying off and removing the tissue necessary for a chance at survival if intestines aren’t involved? Or is the point of tying off and removing just to determine whether I need to euthanize so that I don’t prolong suffering?

Herniated Chick needs help! (graphic photo)

Okay so I tie off the tissue, remove it, then if I find intestines inside of what I remove I euthanize it. Should I wait any amount of time before removing the excess? I’m afraid I’d causing it pain.
