Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

OK so - fortunately no cheeping yet, I think I'm in time to stop with the fiddling. I did notice, though, that the eggs were propped upwards and not on their sides, mostly, today. Is that their hatch orientation? I have been listening and not hearing anything. When I show up the momma does a...

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

lol that's a piece of equipment I actually have, I love it. A small metal trough that a ball jar screws into. :) phew. one thing off the list. I'm going to see if I can gently remove the hens now while everyone's catatonic.

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

Ah, ok. Didn't realize that. Will do. Should I pull them out now, at night, or let them just hop down in the morning... Might be easier now and probably in the morning they might go snooping. ...and it was. Totally easy. They've been kicked off the island. A bit of bipping as in 'what what...

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

OK, makes sense. I'm worried now, I did lift a couple eggs, then it occurred to me - yikes, what if they're oriented one proper way. Being a bad aunt here! But... hopefully it's early enough yet. I was wondering if there were peeps.

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

Hi everyone - checking back on day 18. I am a nervous wreck, lol. This all feels very hard to understand moving through it for the first time! Here's what we've done, just babystepping through what feels right. This mama is one dedicated chicken. I do not think she leaves her nest and so...

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

Oooohh now I understand. Folks talk about wire and the babies running through it; I get it now. So here's what I'm going to do. I had been thinking about putting them all in the old, commercial silly-coop but dh thinks it's just not as safe; it isn't predator-proof and just two nights ago there...

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

Wow. Not even sure what "take them out of the nest" means, but I'm sure it will become apparent. I think I can set them up with a comfy nest like space down below. Right now there are three nesting boxes on the side of the house roosting space, which is enclosed at the top of the ramp. It's all...

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

Ridgerunner, I put some photos in above but not any real explanation. The flock is 5 hens. They have a protected house + smallish run, and that's inside a much larger run where I let them in the mornings, but not wanting them to charge off and lay elsewhere I usually leave them penned until...

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

I ended up taking her off bc I do not think she had left all day. And her vent was just pulsating like crazy. As soon as she hit the ground she did poop, then ran inside to eat ravenously. It's funny to watch her attack the food; it's not as if anyone was keeping her from it earlier. My...

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

I think you can see the space? I can see that down below will be good. I can probably snuggle them into the back corner -- I just wonder if an animal might menace them from outside at night. There were 3 possums here last night and it's possible one was trying to squirm in under the mesh. I...

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

Oh thank you for offering not be be bored with my posting pictures, lol! In fact, their ramp is really long and pretty steep so it's likely not going to be so good. Debbie's suggestion to wait until they start to hatch and set them on the floor of the coop makes sense to me.

Oh my, what on earth have I gotten us all into???

Hi all - seems this is a whole new world to learn about. I have a nearly 4yo buff orpington who goes broody all the time, and is so right now. It's really hard to break her so I decided to see what she could do, purchasing 7 eggs yesterday. And now - yikes, I realize I know _nothing_ about...

blood trickling from vent - this can't be good...

Last night at bedtime, her litter-mate came up to me and just croached down and wouldn't leave. Wanted patting and patting and patting. Just hunkered there a good five minutes. It was so poignant.

Thank you.... Very quiet around here. Everyone is just tip-toeing around. Chickens have never been quieter....

blood trickling from vent - this can't be good...

Sad to report she died today at 11:30am. She survived a few days here, but I guess it all just wasn't recoverable. The swelling had gone down (a bit) but I think the lesion had grown. She liked the warm bath and the hot water did make her pant and I was able to squirt lots of corid water into...
