Hello! I have been away from this thread for the better part of a year. I over did the chicken thing until I was damn sick of anything to do with them. LOL. Decided not to hatch this year. Bought 8 Marans chicks (ended up with 3 splash, 1 black copper, 3 blue copper and 1 wheaten ). I needed...
Thank you!!! I was questioning that myself. He looks similar but something seemed off. I have turned him down. Much thanks, that's all I need.... a Marans roo that isn't a marans! LMFAO
My "2nd in command" rooster is a gentle, docile Lavender orpington. For some reason, the other day he was chasing one of my younger blue copper marans pullets around to mate. (Ive never seen him do this before, he is usually quite a gentleman.) I saw them fly over the fence, and around the barn...
Received VIRKON S today. (disinfectant that kills Mareks apparently) Will try and figure out what to do with it to spray down everything.
By the way, Chooks Man, that BCM was dead the day after you said she was sick. Went out there to see how you could have possibly thought she was "sick"...
Chooks man- I am glad you see some potential in my pullets. I will get better photos of the cockerels. Why do you think one of my marans pullets is sick?
Mareks.
So when I moved here 4 years ago and got chickens I got ready 8 to lay birds (marans, orpington, easter egger). The blue copper...
 no, not at all... but after seeing Chooks Mans birds and others on this thread with gorgeous birds, now I know when I see a scraggly over coloured Marans with too many feathers on his feet and a horrible tail that is destined for the soup pot.
Thanks for the feedback. I will be keeping both these roosters until at least October....
I have about 10 roosters (blue and black and one purchased splash) but they are all full brothers to my pullets.(or at least half )....so didn't want to use them. I used 3 hens and one rooster, and I know...
Roosters- my rooster (Firestorm) who I used to breed my pullets above, ran into the forest after being chased by my Crested Cream Leg Bar rooster and never ever returned..... My "back up" rooster injured his leg, and never recovered, so we ate him.
I bought eggs from two local back yard breeders...
Hi everyone. Floods, pests, fires, drought, and Corona Virus. Thank goodness for chickens.... When I watch the news and reconnect with the world, I feel like I am living in a bad sci fi movie. I just can't do it, so I just watch my chickens.
I've had 6 pullets and 1 cockerel die (I'm assuming...
The incubator was totally dry the whole time. On day 19 I put in about 1/2 cup warm water and it went up to 50%, would fluctuate between 50-55%. If someone hatched it may go to 60, but then a quick pop open of the Bator and it was down to 50's again.
Do you ever sand or degrade the egg shell in...
Well I left the "extra eggs" she gave me in and now it is day 24. Still no peeping. I did a totally dry hatch. All the way thru. At hatch I put it up to 55%. I will pull them out tonight and feed them to the wolves.
I am glad Chooks Man thinks he is ok, and a rooster. I thought so too with the...
Thanks for asking.. but I have bad news.
Nope. I only got one Marans and one olive egger. I sanded gently around hatch line, then wiped with vinegar, then decided to check one egg. infertile. then another- dead fully formed chick, then I checked all of them... 5 dead chicks (fully formed, yoke...
