I saved this recipe in with my other gazillion notes from this thread. So the question is.. I have 1 hen and 1 cockerel along with the hatches I'm getting out of them. I am very lucky to have what I do, even if it is a rooster with bad legs and bad comb. Their type is great, coloring is decent...
When talking about hackle 'flame' you're talking about the individual feathers, right? And just to make sure I'm understanding, the skinnier the black line down the cocks lower hackle the better?
Here's the 1st two to hatch. Down color looks correct with number 2 least desirable? That one has a lot of white in shank feathers. Took a good long look at feet and legs and decided they look fine... As hatchlings. If any crooked legs come about they may not show until later one. But I'm on the...
Wow the building looks really great! How nice to have a skilled builder to help you!
I haven't been on since August and just now caught up on the reading. We are so lucky to have this thread. So much attention paid to our birds and so much knowledge. I love the pictures too! I don't know what I...
Thanks again @Chooks man for the good feedback.
As for his feet, I've been wondering about that. We've named him Dopey because he's walks around all dopey like. You've got a keen eye and picked up on it right away. I tried taking the pictures that you requested but instead opted again for...
Thank you Keith for the feedback.
Glad to hear that you think his tail is correct. It's higher than what my other cockerels was, maybe his was a bit low. Hopefully it will stay short and full but he's still got more growing to do.
His coloring l am pleased with the color of the copper on his...
Hey guys! It's been quite some time since I've been on. I still currently only have 2 Black Copper Marans. I had a Blue Copper Cockerel but had to get rid of him due to an attack on my son. Hatched out another from the original breeder my pullet came from, Lady Olivia. She's 11 months old now...
So it looks like I'm going to have to get rid of my Blue Copper cockerel. As I was opening the door to their pen he came right up behind me and pecked me pretty hard. It left this mark through my jeans. Later today he also went after my two year old. I was already on alert knowing what he did to...
Okay here is some updated pictures of my Blue cockerel. He's 25 weeks old and finally getting more copper since last time I posted.
Unfortunately he has a white stripe in one of his tail feathers, shown in pic below. Is this an automatic cull trait? Was hoping to breed him to Lady Olivia as...
"I don't only incubate only the dark eggs. bad practice...lazy layer lay darker eggs"
This got me thinking. I would think that we should set only the darkest eggs. At least toward the beginning of the laying cycle for similar aged pullets/hens. I agree that a pullet who doesn't lay as often...
Thanks, I will notate this in my mind bank.
Ya know, I saw an interesting thread about sexing chicks by comb at hatch or within a few days. An old timer had suggested to one of the members on BYC that you can get a better understanding of male or female by how far down the beak the comb...
Okay great!
So I learned something new again. Thanks chooksman. I understand why we should should be looking for chicks with short down and less white, but why a lighter comb?
Also, what sticks out to you as being male or female on chicks? Is it just an overall look and hard to explain? You've...
I noticed the chicks with the less white have the thickest and shortest down.
I remember chooks man saying something about chicks with minimal white and short down, so I was happy to see this.
Okay here's some pics of my week old hatchlings.
I got 2 Black and 2 Blue out of the hatch. Happy about that.
Black #1
Here's my very black with minimal white [other than wingtips]. This one looks very similar to my Lady Olivia at the same age.
Black #2
Lots of white.
Here's Blue #1
