Roost height, ramp… IE one silkie

That’s interesting and a good idea! We will be doing cleats every 3 inches and I will really watch her and see what she can do. I wonder if they’ll chicken pile in the new coop for awhile

Will do…. We are going to be working a ton this weekend and hope to have everyone in their new home Monday evening/Tuesday morning.

Roost height, ramp… IE one silkie

Yeah, I didn’t think of that. That’s a good point, it’s 38 inches deep. My husband said he could figure out a way to make the ramp lift/hinge when we have some time, though. That’s kinda why I planned to cover the poop shelf with sand or coffee grounds and scoop the poop daily like I do my cat...

Roost height, ramp… IE one silkie

Don’t mind the sharp edges on the window HWC, my husband is trimming it out this weekend. This is the planned layout, 2 laying boxes and then the pop door. You can see where the ramp hits. I can still walk in and clean, etc. it’s tight but it functions.

And I have the ramp inside now for fitting and marking and it works. I can walk in and still do what’s needed.

Yes, the narrowest coop on earth 😂. It slides out! I considered also putting a piece of laminate cut to size that can come out but it slides out easily. I have seen longer scoop/rake type tools. Worst case scenario, I attach a cat litter scoop to a long thicker dowel?

Roost height, ramp… IE one silkie

I was thinking of putting a light layer of sand or used coffee grounds and scooping it or, maybe like a wallpaper scraper if I leave it bare?

Roost height, ramp… IE one silkie

This is the current set up. I did them all the same height, I was contending with the vents being on the two walls that differ in height but wanting the girls to have 12 inches of roost space, each, optional. I have 84 total inches of roost space, 3 roosts. I will admit, I would change some...

Roost height, ramp… IE one silkie

I think that’s what I struggle so hard with, I obviously want to rock this chicken mama gig, hardcore and there are so many schools of thought. My roosts are installed but the nesting boxes aren’t. We didn’t prioritize those super high because they’re only 7 weeks old and we still have safety...

Roost height, ramp… IE one silkie

Yes but that wouldn’t leave room for a poop shelf, which I wanted and they need to be higher than nesting boxes which Storey’s guide says should be 18-20 inches off the floor, which I’ve been following. I guess my question is can silkies walk a ramp at a 30-45 degree angle like other Chickens...

Roost height, ramp… IE one silkie

My roost is highish (40 inches) I wanted the floor room beneath for sq footage in the coop because it’s on the smaller side for our bird/sq ft ratio. We are building a ramp but I’m concerned about our single silkie. She was one of a pair, her friend died. I know they don’t always roost but she...
