I've never gotten eggs from Ed. Other breeders though. More people are on the Facebook group than here.

    Araucana thread anyone?

I purchased Hatching eggs from them once. I had a good hatch rate, but I don't remember being particularly impressed with the chicks. I've gotten much nicer stock from other breeders. The minimum order for chicks is 16. So that many of their chicks will set you back $224 plus shipping. Ouch...

Trim bum fluff on hens and roosters. It will help ensure their rumpless booties meet when they do the deed.

    Araucana thread anyone?

There are a number of genetic traits in chickens that are considered lethal. The creeper trait is another example. In the case of both creeper and tufts, when an animal inherits two copies of the dominant trait, it results in deformities that are incompatible with life in nearly all cases. I...

    Araucana thread anyone?

First, to ensure maximum fertility in my birds, I give them all bum fluff trims. It helps with copulation, as being rumpless makes it a little more difficult for successful fertilization. Tufts in general are a cause of chick/egg mortality, doesn't matter if there is one, two, three, or hidden...

    Araucana thread anyone?

This little lady was hanging out in the nest box most of the morning. Eventually I bothered her and found the prize she was hiding! There is only one egg that is laid in this nest box (there is another, more popular one), so now I know it is her. The egg is highly likely to be split to...

    Araucana thread anyone?

While I'm not ready to do any hatching while it is so cold and snowy, the girls are giving me much more regular eggs. Hopefully they don't all go broody at once when I do feel like hatching!

I've culled all the ones that did that, too. I deal with enough poopy butts at work (nurse's assistant), I don't want to deal with it with my birds, too!

    Araucana thread anyone?

I get the occasional bird that has that problem with fecal build up around the vent feathers. I just clean it away when I notice it and cut away the offending feathers. I don't pluck, because it hurts them, just the trim. Keeping on top of trimming prevents it, but a bird who has that problem...

    Araucana thread anyone?

Mine do but not many. I consider winter time their break. It takes a lot of resources to make eggs. It lets them rest a little. However, I live in a much higher latitude than you do, with shorter, colder days during the winter. I'd expect a warmer climate like Greece would result in more winter...

    Araucana thread anyone?

Hatching eggs being available at this time of year is unlikely. Most birds are on a break with the days being so short. Hink-JC Poultry is in PA. That is the closest person with Araucana I can think of at the moment.

    Araucana thread anyone?

If she came from a group of birds from a breeder with BCM and Ameraucana, I'd suspect she is an Ameraucana without muffs or a beard. Muffs and beards are a dominant trait, but it is possible for them to throw a recessive bird with none of them (cleanfaced). If the breeder kept Araucana, then I'd...

    Araucana thread anyone?

Yep! The color of the actual shell, inside and out, is blue. A white egg is white, inside an out. Blue is a dominant shell color to white. A green egg is a blue egg with green tinting on the outside. The inside of the shell will be blue. A brown egg is a white egg with tinting, the inside of...

    Araucana thread anyone?

Next year I'll have some split to lavenders with that big lavender rooster of mine. For at least a few weeks I'll pair him off with some of the black girls for some hatching eggs! After that, I'll mostly use this rooster with no red leakage.

Should could have some Araucana in her past. But without knowing for certain, that makes her a mixed breed. So basically an Easter Egger. Actual Araucanas (like the tufted gal in my avatar) are not very common. Your girl does have a lovely little pea comb and willow legs, both of which are part...

    Araucana thread anyone?

Keep your rooster. He is tufted and rumpless. He will pass that on to his offspring. You have some very nice cuckoo hens. There are some folks out there working on cuckoo/barred birds. I am not sure how the genetics works, but eventually you might want to replace him with a barred rooster to...

Probably they're Easter Eggers. Unless they fit into the breed standard of Ameraucanas.

Jamie Watters is shipping me some on Monday. Worth it, methinks! Anyone who is on facebook can join the Facebook Araucana group. It is more active than this thread.

Just a public service announcement. This seller of eggs on eBay is pretty darn good. Incredible packaging skills. They proably could have been dropped from a plane and made it intact. Also, they sent me 11 eggs total, for a 6+ listing. I'm used to an egg or two extra, so getting five extras was...

Got it, so something short. Any publicity on the breed is great! I'll let folks know on facebook and the Araucana Club of America!
