Bullets are ok, not optimal, but as long as they are dark I can handle it! If you can, can you get some pics of her birds?
Also, are her birds from actual Wheatens, or did they originate as "sports"?
Good morning!
Sitting here on the 3rd of December, with the front and back doors open; it's 62*! Looks like it will be warm pretty much all week, then the bottom falls out next Monday, when they are calling for snow and cold! No shocker, it does happen every year, but I am enjoying the warm...
Just tell him that his birds are soooo special, that he needs to build them their own coop and run! They may not look so special then.
My girls are slowly starting to pick up again. Out of 6 layers, three have started again! C'mon slackers!!
The eggs are what grabbed my attention to the breed first. Then the bird personalities and my stubborn streak took over. Sometimes I think my stubborn is more masochistic lately!
Oh would that I could walk the walk at this time. When things calm down here, and I get some help with building, I hope to be able to do just that. In the mean time, I am storing all the info and plans in my mind, and on paper where I can.
Instead of moving the hens, how about moving the roos into their pens? At least you would know who the roo was to all of the hens, then use the trap nests to see what hen was producing what. JMO
My dear Vicki, chronological age has nothing to do with it! I am an old fart just starting, soooo. Personal experience trumps age every time! Keep doing what you are doing gal!!
Barb ~ I have to extrapilate on the last post. For type, read the SOP for the breed. That describes the basic bird in it's form, and what type of comb, shank feathering, eye color it should have, and what the DQs are. These are the basics for the BREED. Now, go to the variety you want to...
Barb, May be just me, but if you are showing, type should be a given! If you are breeding, type should be a given! Without size and type, the rest is moot. But if you have the basic type, then the rest does come into play towards perfecting the variety! If you have funky combs, color, and shank...
On an off topic and good note, it was 70* here today on Dec. 1st!!!! Same for the next couple of days! I'm sure we'll pay for this one way or the other, but another mild winter, with a good snow or two in between, would be ideal for me!! Right now, it is 60* outside!!!
Ok you two, explain to me why the Birchen legs should be darker than the BCM legs. I would think the gold/red gene would want to produce a darker leg than a silver based gened bird would? Am I confused again, or is it just something I missed here?
I've seen this happen in the dog world. Too much influence coming from top winners, yet the dogs in no way matched the SOP or their original function! Very frustrating to say the least, and does nothing to improve the breed as a whole. JMO
this is what I don't understand about some of these standards. Shouldn't they go with what genetically works, as opposed to what some of the big wigs are getting in their breeding programs? Therein, lies many of the problems with this breed, or at least that is how I am seeing it!
