The time has come to make a final decision here on which boy will stay to breed forward and which will heading to freezer camp. I'd like all of your opinions on these boys. Please make sure you read the pros and cons that I've noted about them also.
Boy #1
Pros: very friendly/docile...
I've only had one BCM hen go broody once and while she was a decent mother to her chicks, she was not very protective of them. They all grew up ok but my flock is very accepting of young birds. It was probably just my girl though and was only 1 experience.
I climbed into the brooder this morning and grabbed a few pictures of my BCM babies. They range in age from 4-8 weeks old. Any green banded males will not be staying. Their mother does not lay a dark egg so I can't trust the egg gene that they carry though she hatched out of a very dark egg...
Just wanted to share some pictures of some of my littles from so far this year. They range in age from 2-6 weeks old. Don'tt mind the fermented feed stuck to their feathers. They really get into their food lol
Chocks would look like black copper marans but would carry the recessive wheaten gene. It's very undesirable to have the wheaten hidden under the black copper. If these are for your own flock, I'd say go for it but if you plan to sell the chicks, I definitely wouldn't do it. I had to get rid of...
Congrats!
My new BCM roo joined the flock today. He got his poor butt kicked by my ameraucana roo :/ I'm sure he'll know his place in the flock though within a couple days. The fighting seemed to be over by bed time and he had no problem getting a spot on the roost but his comb is now all blue...
Lol, I should have specified. I ferment their feed and they really get into it. ..and then go dust bathe. The white on them is just dust and feed. The male is from a different line than them and the cloudy eye, she was blinking with the clear eyelid they have and it made the picture look like a...
These ones show his stance a little better but the picture quality is awful. I just recently found my good camera so I'll have to get some decent pictures of him
Thank you. I know that he is very dark but he's of the best type that I've been able to find anywhere. My plan is to grow out some of his offspring and see if any one his sons show more color. If so, I'll put one of them back over my hens. My girls have some copper, one more than the other, so...
OK everyone. I had to replace my nasty roo and this is one i picked from what i could find. I know he's very dark but he doesn't have the extra points on his comb and he has the nice dark hackles. Most of them were very light colored with halos. These pictures aren't great due to lighting but...
I've had both ways. One person sent me a dozen, and I hatched every one of them (only got 3 ladies though). Another person sent me 6 and only 1 hatched. They felt bad and sent me 6 more and again, only 1 hatched. Sorry you haven't had much luck :/
Would you guys mind critiquing my black copper Marans? The 3 ladies in the first pictures are Faith, Mercy, and Grace. Grace is the one with a lot of copper on her neck (is she considered mossy?). The roo's name is Zeus lol.
This last one is Mocha. She's only about 4-5 months...
