Correct! I was surprised so many here thought the US had clean legs. Marans from hatcheries come all kinds of ways, but that does not mean they are correct. Walt

There are a lot of things you will hear online that are just crazy. I don't know what LSU does, but I have never heard of a bird killed to check water content and I have been involved in 4H for many years. I would suspect there is a lot more to this story or it is just nonsense. Walt

White earlobes are a DQ in Marans...so I would say you were ripped off. Making chicks and selling them does not make a person a breeder...there are very few real breeders of Marans. Walt

There seems to be a connection between leg color and white in males tail feathers. the females in the black and Partridge color don't usually have nice butter yellow colored legs. They are swarthy. The males have the bright yellow legs and if they are black seem to have white in the...

We have a ways to go with this issue as it has to be approved by the Board of Directors. My personal opinion is that I am undecided if it should be a DQ or not. I can say here that I think it is a huge fault IMO. You see white in other parti colored birds too. The other thing that plays into...

When judging I see white where it should not be all the time.....usually the base of the tail in males and wingtips or completely white wing feathers in males and females. Marans is not the only breed with this problem. You don't see it in black birds cuz it is usually a DQ in black birds...this...

I have to add. I would not hold much hope in a geneticist fixing the white feather problem. They will tell you what is supposed to happen, but until they can tell you exactly what genes your bird is really carrying they are just shooting in the dark. To begin with they don't always...

Don ..we are not going to water down anything that is a serious fault like this. We just have to be sure that it is done in a way that it is consistent with the purpose of the SOP. The Marans folks are not the only breed that has the white feather problem. Many breeds have this problem and in my...

Don was correct with the info he posted. The Directors thought that the white is covered by "foreign color" a DQ. As our committee got further into this it became evident that it is not explained clearly in the SOP and in reality the SOP only addresses this issue with Black birds. (as a DQ)...

I don't know. This is something the Marans folks have to work out. I guess the question is...how many come out with mulberry faces, combs and wattles.....and why. Walt

Birchen Cochins have a red face, comb and wattles. It is usually not just the face that is dark, when the SOP says mulberry/gypsy. Walt

That is correct as well. The members of the Marans community need to weigh in on these differences while the Standards are being considered. There are examples of breed colors that are slightly different than other breeds having the same color designation, so the APA can't hold a breed to a...

A incorrect colored eye is a 1/2 - 2 point deduction per eye. I have no idea what eye color will be specified yet. Walt

It would be a 2 point deduction to have a mulberry/gypsy face if red is the specified color when the Standard is accepted. Walt

A typical Birchen has the mulberry face and lacing in the chest. Bev Davis has just told me that the Marans will not have the dark face nor the lacing in the chest. I don't know what is out there in the birchen Marans community, but it does seem strange for a Marans to have a gypsy face. This...

If they can get them right they will look awesome. It sounds as if the next variety up for he Marans is going to be the cuckoo, but I haven't seen a decent one yet. Walt
