Very very heartbroken over hatching this year. Out of three dozen I really only have one chick. Not the senders fault at all. They were packed beautifully. The USPS pretty much scrambled them. I got one chick out of the first dozen. The other eggs either never developed or quit a week before...
Also after a lot of research and checking the hatchery and finding the place that actually has the birds I was able to determine that they are not Production reds...just ill bred RIR bred for egg instead of looks but not mixed. The hatchery also sells production reds and you can visually see...
YES!!! LOTS N LOTS of eggs lol. which is good as I sell eating eggs. They may not be what I had thought I bought to begin with but I have learned a lot. And they are a joy to have in the yard.
Thank you. And yes I know what they are lol. Just using them to learn more. They are a joy to have and get a lot of eggs. You statements are what I am looking for. I have a few hens with the longer back and some of them I got after seven of my "pullet" order were roos lol. Can you explain what...
Critique my reds?? GENTLY!!!! LOL YES I KNOW they are not show birds. But I love em anyway. However I am going to someday get some Heritage, Just not until I know a lot more. Untill then I am going to work with tweeking this flock. Just to help me learn without messing up a great line. I took...
I will check into it. I make the oats the same way my grandmom did. She put the rendered fat from whatever animal was on the table into the oats. (no salt added) She also used to make them seed balls from it.
My flock LOVES the steal cut oats. Even more when its cold like this and I cook it first. Feed it to them warm and they don't leave a speck of it lol. As for corn I thought that was mainly a winter food because it was a hot feed?
That is exactly what I was looking for. A memory of My Great Grandmoms RIR's pecking around the house. I learned my lessons lol. And this thread has helped me a lot as well. I had to research and of course it costs a bit more (cough cough) to get the right breed and cover shipping them. But it...
Well said! I agree that hatchery birds serve a purpose. They are great layers and keep both my family and my customers happy in eggs. We live off our land as well and the only "Dead weight" around here is my 32 year old horse lol. But then again he is still great for a relaxing ride and takes...
Thank you for pointing that out. That was all my original statement was. Cheaper to buy eggs direct. Then got mauled for implying Hatcheries don't keep their own flocks. Many moons ago when Cackle was still youngish. They needed a more places to get eggs from. A relative of mine got in on it...
Im not gonna get mad. lol. I want to learn as well. I just know about this one hatchery that was asked about. They pay (used to not sure if they still do) you...or rather give you chicks of the breed you want to keep and get you started. Then you are on your own. They will buy all the eggs you...
I understand that. But what it means is that the person who the hatchery buys those eggs from is a good breeder. Any of the egg birds they have have been bred for eggs. Like their RIR's. And that is FINE! But they have been bred so far past what they are supposed to be it is amazing. Fine as...
THANK YOU!! I have no problem with fast food once in little bit lol. BUT if you ask me what the best place to eat at is im not going to tell you Mc Donalds!! And don't get mad at me for it!!
