Thanks, I'm glad if some of these posts stir some thoughts in folks, that's why we post here from time to time.
The pullet behind the boy in that photo, was given to a junior and her mom after the show. I had promised her a good pullet. They took that pullet to the North Caroline Cape Fear...
Knoxville report- This is an important southern show and usually has more than 6000 birds displayed. This year, the Ohio National's return, following a year off due to the AI scare, came just 3 weeks earlier and this certainly knocked the numbers down for Knoxville's Dixie Classic. Still the...
The Knoxville Show is this weekend. Birds are washed, prepped and ready to go. The show has been designated a Regional Rhode Island Reds Club show. Lots of the top birds will there in exhibition.
We'll be taking along a very good breeder trio of this year's birds for sale. This will be...
Going to be a good Red's display at the Knoxville "Dixie Classic" Show next weekend. They're still taking "phone in" registrations, BTW. Gonna bring a truck load of Reds, LF and bantams. Taking the grandson as always, We always make this trip together and look forward to it each year...
Integration of older females is NEVER easy. Just stay with it. They "fear" going back into a barn pen where they know "strangers" live. LOL
Soon enough, it will be breeding season and you'll be messing with their little society anyhow. Making up breed pens, rotating cockbird, etc.
I have...
If it were me, and this is just me, I'd focus heavily on that K that's in that trio pen. The Ks you showed in the larger pen of birds are inferior. to your Ace in the trio pen.
In a huge field at the Ohio National, our best bird placed #3 cockerel. Here he is. The grand daughter named him Crazy Horse, which is pretty appropriate as he's quite the Red warrior.
Matt Ulrich's Large Fowl cockerel took BB, Res Ch American. Congratulations Matt.
I will be taking a handful of extra large fowl, SC Reds to the Knoxville show. If you have knowledge of folks who have been looking for these birds but don't know how to find a pair or trio, ready to go in late winter breed pens, have them contact me. I believe we can get it arranged...
You CAN combine the hatches when one group is 2 weeks and the other is 3 weeks. Or 1 week olds and 2 weeks olds. There isn't THAT much difference between them. Since you're hatching every week, combining closely hatched groupings is easy. The earlier you combine the better.
I do NOT find...
This is an incubator. The eggs are a specific breed pen arranged in rows. As you see. The eggs have my code written on top.
This is one of my hatchers. Simple but very effective. Since I only hatch 10-14 days off a single mating, the clutch is very small, typically a dozen eggs or less...
Continuous Setting and Hatching Method.
I don't want to cover all that ground again, as it was dealt with pretty thoroughly in those in depth posts last August/September????
But in short, the concept to grasp is this. Gather eggs from your three breed pens, but ROTATE their starting date...
Having a dedicated hatcher is the proper way. Or, some incubators have dedicated hatching trays. Same same. I do not "mix" eggs from different pens for the very concerns you have @ejcrist .
It is very simple if you hatch dedicated batches. Toe punching or web snipping with cuticle scissors...
So what happens if a person, unknowingly or unwittingly, being under-educated in the differences between Standard bred fowl and mass produced feed store/hatchery birds? Yes, it happens. Very sad to walk the Junior aisles and see birds that some young person cooped into the show without a clue...
I hope everyone gets the chance to show at a National meet, a National sized show some time in their lives. It's an experience you won't soon forget. At the Ohio National this weekend, almost 300 Rhode Island Reds were cooped in, (along with almost 7000 other birds). Shows of this size...
I don't show much at "show closer to me" as it takes about as much work to prepare and I'd rather travel to the major shows. Knoxville is my farthest at 12 hours drive time. Columbus National will be around 7.5 hours.
There are solid shows "near" you @daxigait but you now better understand...
Thanks for the good wishes.
There so much to do in such a short time. APA meeting, Red's Club meeting, friends, looking and enjoying the birds. Seven thousand birds to be precise. LOL Seminars abound. I always enjoy P. Allen Smith's, to be honest.
