Yes, I crossed the Good Shepard (Ringlet) line with Stukel BRs. He is from 2nd generation cross.

Yes you are right, the first one, don't cross Nelson with Mohawk for example. Strain and line are also interchangeable terms. This is not a hard and fast rule, it's just that when you cross different lines, the results are not predictable. Certain lines have their known good and bad traits and...

Why not just switch to using wing bands? They don't come off and no holes to grow back in. That's what I did.

Thank you. You know he also won Super Show Champion at the Safford Show in January.

I might add, I had someone pestering me from a CL ad to do exactly that and give him/her a shipping quote for a RIR trio. Emailed several times asking, asking....all this time, never any signature to the email, and CL makes email anonymous, so don't even have real contact info. And never a name...

Totally agree. I've got freezers with lots of chicken from last year. Going to thaw some out today, cook up, debone and freeze the meat in baggies. Takes up less space that way and easy meals. Then will have room for more birds in the freezers....we eat a lot of chicken. Yesterday a lady...

Yes I would but only one will fit per box and they are a year old, so by the time you pay for the birds + box + shipping, it would be very expensive. Probably around $100 per bird because the PO requires them to go Priority Express. I have offered them to be shipped before and no one wants to...

Thank you @gander007 , I have had ads on local CL for some time trying to sell my Rhode Island Reds, no luck at all. Even have a show guy who also has RIRs both bantam and large fowl asking around for me, and having no luck selling these. One of his referrals was supposed to come down on Friday...

These last few posts make it sound like every seller on CraigsList is selling crappy birds, and that is just not the case. The buyer does need to know what they are looking for and ask the right questions, and see the birds. But there are good birds to be had from CraigsList ads as well as poor.

Even with chicks, they could be Mycoplasma carriers. I'm holding onto my Barred Rocks, they are a favorite of mine plus I'm making good headway with them. One of my cockerels won Super Show Champion at the Safford, AZ show in Jan and the same bird won Champion American at the Apache County show...

Yes, for adult large fowl birds, it sure is and the post office requires Priority Express shipping for them. When I tell people they'd be looking at $100 or more per bird to ship, they back right off. But most people don't realize this. I've had people from across the country ask me about...

Hi all, I've not been on BYC for a while. Been feeling pretty frustrated with chickens this year and have done no hatching and think I will just take the year off and just work on turkeys. I decided to get out of my Rhode Island Reds, that decision so many make after experience says you are...

For critiques, it is best to let them stand naturally on the ground, so we can see the body shape, tail angle, etc. Get down on the level of the bird for a photo. Her color looks a little pale to me, like a production red.

I actually don't know that well. Perhaps this happens at the larger shows but at least the last 3 years, since I've been showing (not that long, I know) here in Tucson and in Safford, AZ, no birds have been stolen. Our Tucson show has over 1000 birds shown, so not huge like Ohio National but not...

My birds are all wing banded and I write the wing band # down on the coop tag as well as the leg band #. I remember reading somewhere that someone was able to recover a stolen bird because of the wing band. They can be removed too but not as easily. If someone is determined to steal your bird...

Where do you live? I'm in Tucson, Arizona. Got my first Mohawk (aka Reese line) RIRs just 3 years ago. Beautiful, calm birds. I started over with new pullets from some of my original birds this year and will hopefully be able to ship chicks when they start laying well enough. They are April...
