Short lived perennial? I planted one small plant of these in the back of my lily bed 10 years ago, I now have a patch 6 feet wide by at least 30 feet long. Original plant still there, and the only reason it's just 6 feet wide is because every spring and fall I chop the heck out of it to contain...
Finally got the last of the tomatoes, beans and cucumbers out and chopped into the compost pile. Been doing it a little at a time cuz we've been laying a new tile floor and painting..Kale, carrots and lettuce are up already and got the chard, beets, turnips and mustard planted.
how does everyone...
What do you use to grind your wheat? I have a fine food mill that I run it through, sift it, then run it through my electric coffee grinder for an even finer flour but its a lot of extra steps and I only do enough for a loaf of bread at a time. There has to be a better system that isn't the $500...
Someone earlier in the thread was asking what to do with her ground cherries. Today I made vanilla cupcakes with a gingered ground cherry filling piped into the centers, and topped with vanilla frosting and sprinkled with brown sugar. They were to die for!
Make those green beans the same way you do bread and butter pickles,, they're great! Can't get enough of them on my salads! I do the same with beets and jalapenos.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned jewel weed for poison ivy yet. Its a natural remedy/weed that grows in the same places as poison ivy. Works great if you immediately rub the jewel weed leaves on the affected area. No rash, no blisters, nothing. Its in the inpatients family, and I grow it in...
You're right, but the big companies will always follow the money. Right now that's the young kids and online purchases. Us older folks might have money, but we have too much sense to fritter it away like today's kids do. We ha e too much common sense to be swayed by the advertising for whatever...
You are exactly right on all of it. The theft is less than cashier wages, workers comp, etc. and they don't have to worry about employees not showing up, not doing a good job, etc. And their target competition is amazon, has been for the last 8 years, a d that's the direction they're taking...
After I retired I worked as a cashier at Walmart. They purposely pulled the fastest cashiers off the registers, made us put up stock, handle returns, anything to force long lines so people would use self check. Self check attendees were directed to pull people from lines and help them check out...
I am the best rock farmer in the world! I'm sure of it! I have a raised bed that was filled with nothing but sifted compost, and when I went out today to fertilize it for putting in my carrots I found tons of rocks! They weren't in there when I planted my onions this spring, and there are no...
Lemon balm makes a lovely tea, can also make a nice jelly with it. As for drying herbs, I do have a dehydrator but don't use it for them. I just pick the leaves off and put them in a bowl on my table. Every time I pass by them, I give them a quick toss to help the air dry them, they're done in a...
I wanted a break from all the canning so I weeded, fertilized the entire yard today, that's every flower and vegetable bed on 2 acres of growing space! I'm too old for this kind of break, lol! I did not harvest a single thing, did not even look to see what was ready, didn't want to know if there...
ground cherry crumble pie! Yum! That crumble topping is perfect with the ground cherries. And if you don't take the husks off, those ground cherries keep for a long time. (Giving you time to keep harvesting til you have enough for pies)
Today's haul from the lower garden. Roma tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, onions and dill. Already pulled in a basket of green and gold Romano beans, ground cherries and chard from the upper gardens earlier today. Could've let everything get bigger before picking but I'm going to be gone for a...
thank you, thank you thank you! Now I know what I can get my husband for his birthday! And the n he can build me more chicken coops, and then I can have more chickens, and then..... Lol. Anyway, didn't even know this existed and I'm sure he will love it.
My main garden has always had an 8' welded wire fence around it, but I'm told the main reason all the deer don't jump in is the raised beds inside. Very narrow walkways so no good place to land. I tried the same theory on my veggies beds alongside the driveway with only 4 foot chicken wire...
