Morning all. A bit rainy, which is good - DH is officially now in charge of the garden, the dog & the chickens. I hope everything/one is alive when I get back. ☮️
I have used cardboard & wood chip mulch in the paths since I first started the garden. It doesn't last long or keep the weeds at bay. I'm a bit neurotic about weeds in my garden, I wish I wasn't, but they bother me & I seem to waste too much time on them. I was thinking of slate stone with...
I agree. I have not bought Sungold starts in years because the volunteers just do so much better! But sometimes they cross with my brandywines & make funny catfaced little maters. 😆
So what does everyone use as mulch on the garden paths?
I have edamame, borage & squash coming up, yay. I watered. Tomorrow the tomatoes & eggplant go in & then it'll just be reseeding what doesn't come up or what the squirrels/snails ate.
That's exactly what I was thinking - didn't seem to make much sense to me. I do, however, cut off seed stems if they show up early - I'll have to pay attention to that this year & see if it causes any problems. Thanks for the link.
Do any of y'all cut your onion tops back? I'm talking large sweet spanish bulbing type. I always have when they're little (couple inches) but have never done it when they're big. Seems like a lot of people are either YES, for sure or NO, don't be dumb. LOL. Opinions?
You never know what you might end up with, sometimes it's fun! I will let volunteer tomatoes grow just to see what they are, I've had some interesting crosses for sure.
ETA: last year I had a very interesting volunteer squash cross, it was light green & looked very much like a yellow...
I don't because I always plant different kinds so close that they for sure cross pollinate.
ETA: or I cross pollinate by hand pollinating if they're under cover.
I love johnny jump ups.
I got all the peppers & flowers planted. Back still feels pretty good, I love my new spinal cord stimulator.
It's chilly here, I'm sitting here hoping the pellet stove will come on. Have to bring the tomatoes in & cover the peppers.
I leave for vacation in 4 days...
Oh I also reseeded some beans I think the snails got & some that just didn't come up.
Planting the peppers now & am thinking about a cover for the next night or 2 since it's chilly (low 40s), not for frost but just retain a little warmth. Going to hang onto the tomatoes till Tues, then plant.
So I went out to get chicken food. Decided to swing by a family farm for starts. I went to school with this family, big name in my small town so I like to support them. Holy cow! $4 per 4 in pot of teeny tiny starts (literally an inch or 2). I had no idea they were that expensive till I...
I am SO mad - I slept thru it. Probably the first time in my life it was really visible here & I was asleep. I'm so mad at my sister for not waking me up too. :hit
That's crazy! I wish my girls would attack the squirrels, they all hang out together. 🙄
Cool & cloudy today. DH just picked up a bunch of plastic pallets to rebuild the compost bins with. My wooden ones only lasted 2 years. Not necessarily a fan of plastic, but I have to pick my battles...
I can relate with this dude. Those little jerks went thru my starts on the table that I was hardening off & pulled them out of their pots! Dirt everywhere, such carnage for no reason. My garden beds are covered with hardware cloth right now while the seeds are germinating. & I use...
Do y'all save your nasturtium seeds? It must be easy enough, no?
Got 2 more loads of wood chips this am. Cloudy out, threatening to rain.
My borage is coming up now. :yesss: I need some flowers for the bees, I don't think my strawberries are getting pollinated. My transplanted clematis...
Either I was reallly sloppy with the carrot seeds or there was dill or cosmos in the compost. Could go any way. 🤣
I have no clue what my cosmos are, but they're so lovely I bought more seed this year. My originals are pink or white & get to be 4 feet tall, I bought reds/oranges. Got any pics?
Rain broke for a few so I went out to pull all the morning glory vines from the fence (best to do it when wet).
Took a walk thru the garden, I have all the pole beans, the first 2 rows of bush beans & nasturtiums all coming up. I just love how easy beans are - some of these seeds I saved...
