    Sour Crop

Suze Hen died on March 8th. I wanted to find out why she died, and I'm close to UCDavis, I took her to have a necropsy done. She died of egg yolk peritonitis. From the report: This is one of the most common causes of mortality in chickens and typically results from an ascending infection...

    Sour Crop

Does a hen with sour crop need her crop to be emptied before beginning monistat treatment? I've tried to empty her crop but nothing comes out. She has bad smell from her beak and white runny poop. She is a 4 year old speckled Sussex. I've massaged her crop, given her monistat, epsom salt...

Adding two 2.5 year old hens

I currently have two 3 month old pullets. A friend is moving and giving me her 2.5 year old hens. Will this age difference be an issue? I'm planning on integrating the 2.5 YOs slowly. Thank you for your responses!!

    Hard Clay Dirt in Run

Since my chicken run is hard clay dirt, should I lay down a layer of hay, alfalfa or other material? I use PDZ in the small coop, and dirt, sand, pine shavings in the run part of the coop (not my larger run enclosure). I've read not to use straw since it's tubular and that's where mites, etc...

    Too Much Shade?

My husband and I enclosed a space behind our shed in the corner of our yard. We put a small pre-fab coop/run in the enclosure. My concern is this area gets absolutely no morning sun, since our neighbor's tree hangs over into this corner of our yard. This area gets some afternoon sun. I...

Comment by 'momtobogey' in article 'Raising the Roosts in a Small Coop'

Great idea! I've been trying to come up with some way to put the roosts higher, but the nesting boxes (2, which are blocked off) are in the way. This will solve that problem. These prefab coop/run combos are not well thought out. But I knew when I bought this coop that it would be my...

    Game of Hen or Roo??

Lacy is an almost 7 week old blue laced wyandotte. I was told she was a vent sexed female. Any guesses? Your feedback is much appreciated!
