I bought one of those radiant heating plates for really cold nights. It does not put out a lot of heat and even if something gets against it, it doesn't catch fire.

Should I cover or not cover my run? Pros and cons.

I don't have any trees and the ground is a gentle slope, so water does run off it. the area gets sun up to about 12 or 1 PM, then it is shaded by house. Bu I am in North GA and it gets really hot here, even in the shade. My hen house windows are 5 X 16 inches, two of them across from one...

What would be the benefits of building a larger run?

I am new to chickening and my run is 6 X 14, plus another 10 SF under the hen house. I am getting only four hens week after next as we are still putting on the roof. I have read that 10 sf per bird is adequate. I have 94 sf, so almost 25 sf per bird. If you can do bigger, go for it. It can't...

Should I cover or not cover my run? Pros and cons.

I just ordered a door for mine. Does it get hot in the coop at night? It has 3 vent windows in the coop, but I wondered if I need to put a small fan in there?

Should I cover or not cover my run? Pros and cons.

We live very rural on a lot of land with every kind of predator you can think of, coyotes, Racoons, possums, bobcats, hawks, bald eagles, and we have even seen a black bear or two. A large part of our yard is fenced for our three dogs. The coop was put inside the fence to offer a double layer...

thanks. The area will get morning sun, but by around 12:30 or 1:00 PM, the whole area is shaded by the house.

Should I cover or not cover my run? Pros and cons.

I am just putting my run together. I plan on roofing as least part of it. I am new to chickening. should I cover the who run (I live in N GA so it does get hot here in the summer) or leave part of it uncovered? Run is 6 ft. x 14 ft. Do chickens like to sit in the sun? We do have hawks, so...

How high to put hardware cloth on run

I would consider covering the top as well, with something. Racoons can climb and lattice would make a good ladder for them. Also, if you have hawks, they can pick them off.

How long until grass is chem free?

I cut our lawn service off last October, way before I started thinking about chickening. Mine will be in a run, but the run will partly be on that grass. I have asked my service multiple times about that because I have dogs that go in to my fenced back yard. I was told what they use is safe...

New to chickening.... Glad to have found this group.

Yes, I agree. I am still trying to locate some reputable hatcheries. I don't want to do the baby chick thing. I don't have a set up for it. I do see where some of the hatcheries that have chickens say they are vaccinated. But I have only found a few within a reasonable distance for me to...
