**** UPDATE*****
So after two nights manually placing them inside and then checking up on them a few hours later, they’re going in at night. Yesterday and today they went inside all on their own. Hopefully it keeps up.
Of course! Don’t apologize. I always appreciate people’s experiences and comments. The Only way to learn! This forum and the people on here are so helpful.
I don’t think it’s fear since only the older ones are starting to lay. I had another soft one like this in the nesting box last week. But starting to get some nice production. Been busy the past few days… hopefully tomorrow I can get them out to free range. They seem to really love digging...
I just placed them in… a little off topic but it looked like one of my chickens laid an egg on the droppings board but the shell looked really soft. Clearly the egg broke but the shell was like jelly? Does that happen when they first start laying? My chickens just started laying a few weeks ago...
Yea I heard at night you can trick them since they’re in a sleepy state… and place the new birds inside I dunno I think I read that somewhere . I’ll check them a few times and see what happens.
We wanted to add only one new one but the farm we went to had a 3 bird min. The original 6 were 7 but one was a rooster. Figured maybe one of the new ones would end up a rooster but nope… lol. You think once it gets colder they would want to go inside at night for warmth? I could also try that...
I don’t have any pictures of the roosting bars. Basically I have a droppings board and then about 12” up off that on a diagonal I have one 65” roosting bar. The. Approximately 12” higher than that I have another 65” roosting bar but perpendicular to the first one. Kind of like an “X” pattern.
So I recently introduced three new hens (approximately 16 weeks old) to my existing flock (23 weeks old). I kept them separated at first by placing a large dog crate inside my run. I kept them separate for about 4 weeks. I then slowly introduced them together by letting them free range outside...
I can try that. I think I wanna try letting them mingle together a little more before that because once they’re in the coop together, it will be much harder to get them out. I don’t have a walk in coop.
So I have 6 hens (copper maran, RIR, blue Plymouth, 2 buff orpingtons and an Easter egger) about 18 weeks old that are already established in my coop. I have three new hens approxinately 10 weeks old (jersey splash, olive egger and grey maran).
Currently the 3 new ones are inside a large dog...
How long are unopened bags usually good for? Like I mentioned in my original post, I keep them stored in a deck box that has a lid with all my other chicken items.
I bought a few bags at once because chewy had a deal But if they spoil fast I’ll avoid doing that in the future.
At first I pulled the few clumps that fell into their feed bucket but ended having my wife up pull the feed bucket out since I’m at work. I’ll wash it out in the AM when I get home. I have a fresh bag of Kalmbach non gmo flock maker that I wanted to switch them to anyways since they’re about 18...
Just noticed the bottom of my Kalmbach organic feed was clumped together and moldy. I only opened the bag about a week and a half ago. I always roll the top of the bag down to prevent moisture. Top 2/3 of the bag was fine. Chewy is replacing the bag of feed but I’m curious if there are any tips...
