Chickens are not returning to nor roosting in their coop at night, and I'm not sure what to do.

At that age you should keep them in the coop , locked in if possible, so they know they are in their forever home. That also depends on if you have bigun’s in with them. When we put our RI Blues in the big coop last weekend they stayed in the coop all day as the big girls walked in and out, and...

Chickens are not returning to nor roosting in their coop at night, and I'm not sure what to do.

We have some twerps from the last clutch of 26 that still aren’t roosting at 4+months. They stand on top of the nesting boxes or on the ground while the big girls are roosting on the bars. We’ve gone into the coop at night and picked them up to put them on the roosting bars where they stay until...

    My interesting inter-species flock

Our turkeys are very protective of any chicks we put in the yard. We have 3 grown Toms ,a teen Tom , and a female tween. They are all watchful of the pullets we have and will puff up and circle us when we are handling the chicks. Our bantams will stand under the Tom’s when the bigger hens pick...

    Frenzy at snack time…

We went out with about 2 dozen scrambled eggs, and shells crunched up. Of course the Donks gotta see if it’s something they want.

5 broody hens and a new Momma!!

We have two hens in a store coop in the barn that went broody, so we closed the gate to separate them from the others. Now they are wallowing in filth of broken eggs and poop as they will not leave the nest and get almost violent along with the screeching if we try to look under.

Is there a way to block pop up videos on app?

Thank you, they are not BYC related and I am using my iPhone most of the time to use the app.

Is there a way to block pop up videos on app?

When trying to post sometimes these videos will pop up full screen. Even when I close it out and try to start typing again, they pop back open

Topic of the Week - Integrating Chicks into an Adult Flock

Just seems small at that age, IMO, as even at 7 weeks or so, which is my preference on integrating, they get chased or bullied by many of the older hens. Maybe my hens are just mean until the twerps can fight back. We’ve got 6 RI blues that are about 6 weeks and have been in look don’t touch for...

Official BYC Poll: How often do you change your chickens' water in hot weather?

We have 2 gal buckets in each coop and 2 -15 gal tubs in the barn. The 2 gal buckets are topped off 1-2 times a day as needed and cleaned / dumped and rinsed every weekend. The tubs are good for 2 weeks before they get grungy looking and need dumped and scrubbed out. We will drop the hose on low...

Topic of the Week - Integrating Chicks into an Adult Flock

Sorry for your loss.😫 We integrated 25 of mixed breeds a few months ago and still have some older hens bullying the tweens. We’ve also had some older hens abandon the coop after we put the tweens in with them. They refuse to be put back in, and have run out in the dark to go to a different coop...

5 broody hens and a new Momma!!

We’ve posted a while back about our bantam going broody, she’s dedicated to brooding but wasn’t staying on the same eggs ( she was swapping nest boxes). Went out and found another hen pecking the older eggs and had killed the half formed chicks. Our plan was to move Crowella to a store coop , so...

How do you deal with the heat for the ladies..?

Was thinking of the misting outside the coop, so as not to make a sauna, although, you are right, light rain on a hot day only makes it worse. We do use an additive to the water for electrolytes and vitamins.

How do you deal with the heat for the ladies..?

We are in Central Florida and the temps have been up into the 90’s with heat index of over 100*. The girls , in the past few years, have always found shade spots on the side of coops, in coops, behind barn , or under the shed and we have lost a couple to the heat. We have industrial fans set up...

Were You Attacked and Injured by YOUR Rooster?

We have posted on Craigslist to rehome several Roosters, as we have too many, and I haven’t taken the time to build a bachelor coop for them. We were also concerned about them fighting and injuring each other with all the testosterone in one coop. We have 5 Cemani Roosters in a coop that we...

Were You Attacked and Injured by YOUR Rooster?

Thanks, She’s tough, and meaner than the rooster🤪. It’s funny , sort of, that the little Napoleon complex Bantam is the only human aggressive Roo we have, and we have 15 “real” Roosters 3 of which are Brahma. We have 2 other bantam roosters, smaller than the **shat , that are sweet and gentle.

Were You Attacked and Injured by YOUR Rooster?

Just Friday we were in the garden cutting veggies. My wife was holding the basket and as she reached to adjust it , the little bastard hit her from behind causing her to cut her arm. 13 stitches later, she doesn’t want to send him to the smoker. He always waits til our back is turned, and when...

Were You Attacked and Injured by YOUR Rooster?

Our aggressive Roo is a bantam also. I caught him under a bucket after he hit me from behind, and left him there for several minutes. When I let him out he was very calm, all feathers down, and even his “big brothers” the turkeys , didn’t know what to do as I wasn’t aggressively chasing the Roo...

    Breaking Broody

We have a broody barrred rock bantam that keeps switching nests. She’s sat on 9 eggs for 2 weeks, leaving her Polish boy toy to sit on the eggs while she went and got food. Then she started sitting on 5 eggs in the nest next door, and again 10 days later on 6 eggs next door to that nest. We...
