I bought myself a present yesterday - a Montmorency Cherry tree. I had a sapling several years ago, and it was really taking off. Then one heavy snow storm, the plow guy plowed right over it :/ I've been wanting a replacement ever since, and I did it this year! I will, however, be planting...
I got sucked into an Ancestry project, so haven't been on the chicken forums since early February. Too many pages to read to catch myself up. Hope everyone at least has the weather to get out and do some yardwork. For those of you actually putting things in the ground and seeing things...
please be aware that Canada Geese are not the only birds that transmit HPAI - all waterfowl can be carriers, as well as some birds that are not waterfowl. Also, HPAI can live for awhile outside the host - so if an infected bird passes by on it's way to somewhere else, and leaves droppings in...
Burnt a big pile of grapevines, multiflora, and honeysuckle yesterday. Enjoyed the last day of warm weather. Temperature started dropping last night and snow in the coming forecast.
57 degrees in upstate PA right now ❤ I took a half day to do some more yard work. Coop cleaning is also on the agenda. Snow in the forecast for Tuesday 😞
My fodder experiment was a bust. It molded just as the seeds were sprouting. Next time, I'm going sterilize the soaking water with some horticultural lime - it works for growing mushrooms without mold, so it should work for fodder (fingers crossed 🤞).
In other news, we are expecting a high...

I'm excited for Friday! supposed to be in the high 40s and no rain :) I've arranged to have a half day off work, and I'm going to pick up all the branches in the yard from the last couple of windstorms. January thaw has my cabin fever going hard :D
Our maple producers are ready! January thaw is usually when the sap starts running. They are all hoping for a long stretch of freeze thaw cycles to get a good year in.
Well, I have a "work-from-home" day today due to ice - It's dead quiet, though, in my "virtual office". I think I'll take a long lunch and jump into this fodder project.
I read online that someone used their birdseed to sprout their fodder with. I have bird seed. Sounds like a cheap and easy...
make sure that comfrey goes in a place that you NEVER want to use for anything else. Comfrey is great, but it sets up permanent residency. I recommend putting one or 2 near your compost location and your chicken coop. My girls love to eat the leaves.
Make sure your comfrey is fully dead...
