I also finally figured out something.
I originally ordered eight chicks, and the hatchery included five extra, and I’m pretty sure they are straight run and not all roosters. None of them are behaving like roosters, but I could be wrong.
Anyway, today I was finally able to identify the breeds...
We are DONE! One nice predator proof run and coop!
I will build the nesting box and expand the run when they get bigger, maybe in about 5 weeks. For now, I needed to get them out of the basement brooder.
Guess what? The city I live in is hosting a Dutch oven cooking contest on the Fourth of July!
It’s no surprise that I’m going to enter, but I need to figure out what to make.
I might go with peach cobbler.
You just gave me an idea for an experiment.
I wonder if it’s possible to put a pie tin inside a cast iron Dutch oven and bake a nice looking pie with just coals for heat. I suppose it’s worth a shot. I just need to do research first.
Still, that’s an awesome looking pie. I’m might as well try...
My grandfather, (not the one who has dementia who lives with me,) came to visit me and my family. I decided to surprise him with one of my Dutch oven meals.
I made him Peach cobbler.
It worked out well, but next time I need to drain the peaches more. A little too much liquid on the bottom.
I got a new brooder in the mail coming today. Those chicks are getting big and I needed a bigger brooder. The coop is about halfway done, by the way.
On a side note, I found this recipe, and I’m gonna try to adapt it to Dutch oven.

Had a bit of a scare last night. One of the chicks escaped the brooder and I couldn’t find her until 9:00 PM. She wasn’t hurt, she was calmly roosting on the food storage shelf.
How she got up there, I don’t know. I guess she’s a good jumper.
This recipe may need an amendment later, but here it is.

Good morning, everyone.
I did another Dutch oven experiment.
I turned the lid upside down and used it to make scrambled eggs while hash browns were cooking in the main oven. It was a success, and I made a delicious Mountain Man Breakfast.
Next time, though, I need to cook everything 10...
