Cleaning dried membrane from newborn duckling

Warm water should work fine. You can set the duckling right in a bowl of warm water and gently wipe it down. I used a soft toothbrush to help pull away the membrane on a chick. Return the baby to the incubator so it stays warm while it dries off.

    Incubating Eggs from Road-side Stall?

Everyone is still kicking! The two problem chicks are doing better now but appear to be stunted. Here’s to hoping they are still able to grow into full size adults.

Problem chicks, one blind and one with leg/foot issues

Both chicks are still alive! Little black one has somewhat straighter toes and the itty bitty white one is definitely not blind. Both are eating, drinking, pooping etc but both are definitely a bit stunted due to the rough start. While small, I think both will be okay now :) hopefully the white...

    Paper wasps

Well, I too let a paper wasp nest grow right above a door as it wasn’t doing anything aggressive and I appreciate the wasps eating the pesky garden catapillars. I walked out that door several times without issue from the wasps but one day it became an issue. It was hot as heck so I was only...

    Air pocket on chick

I would expect an air pocket under the skin to be somewhat mobile when squished around. It could be a ruptured air sac but it seems odd to have it in such a fresh chick. How is the chick today? Is the bubble still there?

    Air pocket on chick

Probably not an air pocket but the crop. I've noticed on a couple I had hatched with the same thing, one was red and that chick in particular pipped the wrong end and ruptured a blood vessel while doing so. In short my little chick's red bubble was just a crop full of egg fluids and blood that...

Problem chicks, one blind and one with leg/foot issues

The black chick was hobbling around on the pad of the foot with the toes curled up, think army crawling. It seem to of made a turn around, both of them are doing better actually! The hobbles came off the black chick on their own and it seems to be walking more normally even with the taped foot...

    Split beak

Could just be from an old injury. I would think it is similar to when a finger nail splits, it keeps growing split unless you can cut it back to where it isn't split. If you can keep it nicely trimmed perhaps it will resolve?

Problem chicks, one blind and one with leg/foot issues

Hatched out some eggs over the last couple days. The last two I ended up assisting after finding one chick had already died due to hatching issues. There were 3 other chicks that were all upside down in the eggs and dead, one had a bad leg deformities so it's probably for the best. Both these...

    Incubating Eggs from Road-side Stall?

Everyone is doing well other than the last two I had to help. One acts like it is blind and the other has some leg/toe issues that I think I can fix. The one with leg/toe issues has eaten and I've shown it the water. It hobbles around pretty well despite having it's legs tethered together. The...

Day old chick with fused/webbed toes

Curious to know what happened for this little guy. Any updates?

    Chick not roosting

How are the legs looking? How high are the roosting bars? I hatched out 2 frizzled chicks from some barnyard mix eggs. Neither can really fly and the smallest chick has a really hard time jumping higher than 2ft. I made a makeshift ladder type roost out of branches, she can reach the lower bar...

Hen with severe feather and skin damage - help needed with treatment and integration with flock

Time and some good basic care of feeding and cleaning the wounds as needed should do the trick. She's definitely beat up by all those roosters. I'd worry a bit about her staying warm at night (if it's chilly in your area) and possibly even getting a sunburn. Keep an eye on the exposed skin...

    Incubating Eggs from Road-side Stall?

Well change of plans. I had to assist the pipped egg as it was not able to zipper properly, it was trying but all it was doing was a sort of vertical widening of the hole. I helped it out but it has some sticky goop all over it. There was no blood and no yolk so it was ready to come out. I also...

    Incubating Eggs from Road-side Stall?

2 more added to the brooder this morning! The green egg hatched as did one of the wrong end pips (a light cream egg). I heard the distress peeping at night and had to wake up both times to give them a hand, one was wedged just right between the egg cartons and the other was just sitting in the...
