Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

It was yesterday’s picture. I think it must be the bright sunlight because up close it looks very pale. I noticed it looking red in the picture too.

Awww. She also lays the prettiest dark khaki-green eggs. Of course if she spends her whole summer being broody I won't see many of those!

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Happy Monday everyone. Tassels is out on day release again today. Who can resist that face? But I fear once again she has deceived me. I just heard broody sounds. Please Tassels. It has been almost a month now. Just STOP! Here is her mugshot. I remain besotted, though also exasperated!

It’s a bit out of focus so hard to be sure, but to me that looks normal.

I didn’t know she was still laying eggs. Sounds like one broke inside her. I am really not an expert on that situation but I have seen others posting about it. It may be worth posting in the emergency thread to get advice. Did you find any shell?

Baby mice. They were still blind and hairless and they apparently went down a treat with a sip of wild water!

My contribution to Pony Sunday. The turkey was wary of me. The rabbit was too busy munching to pay much attention to me.

It is kind of disgusting to watch when they do that. I am sure she will be OK. Mine ate a whole nest of baby mice once while I looked on in horror!

Thanks. I figured that was probably the case but you know I do worry! Otherwise she seems aggressively healthy. Her feathers are shiny and she is charging around in the undergrowth catching bugs. She is so far in I can’t see her even though I am sitting in the chicken yard - but I can hear...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

I have let Tassels out on a trial release. So far so good. But she is still making broody noises and flaring up. But she hasn’t gone back to the nest for several hours and she is running around in the Goldenrod and Artemesia forests. I had forgotten that she is quite bold towards me. She...

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Happy Friday everyone. I struggling to get fluffy butt shots - best I have managed so far today. Tassels is still in jail and doing her best to persuade me she is done with being broody. ‘Honestly Mom, I have seen the error of my ways. You should let me out of jail so I can prove that going...

I have more nest boxes than hens and they still fight over one. Strangely, not always the same one.

Some other kind of grass has gone to seed and the ladies are having a fine old time eating it and refuse to pose for Thirsty Thursday.

Let me understand something. All you horse people actually do this for fun? Just reading the above terrifies me!

Fluffy Butt Acres: Stories of our flock

Yes. It is the 21 days leading up to that. I worry for her health. Maybe next time she will be better - but this time she only ever left the nest if hauled out by me or encouraged out by Piglet when they were broody together. Right now she is determined to hatch a length of 2x4 I provided in...
