We have 8 week old Golden Comets that keep flying out the upper part of electric fence.
Is it too early to clip her wings? How do I do that? Is just 1 wing enough?
I was hoping they would get bigger faster but they’ve figured out the upper part has bigger holes! 😑
She does look happy w herself
We were supposed to have 10 GC hens.
BUT I have some that the tail feathers point down and some that are straight up like a cockerel!
I have read that GC cockerel will be white except shoulder!
What is this one?
So I thought they would be happy in their bigger coop - out of box (24). They’ve been in almost an hour and haven’t calmed down - peep up a storm. They are about 9 weeks old. Is this normal? Adjusting?
Has anyone used baskets for nesting boxes? Dh will build shelves w dividers but I have a lot of these cheap baskets and w straw, maybe? What do yall think? May be easier to clean? Using baskets as make shift tractor.
20 hens/4 straight run
I can’t believe it’s been 7 years since a raccoon decimated our small flock (6).
We’ve relocated raccoons (over 12) and got 24 babies for Easter! We still have raccoons - will deal with them via electric fence and other means.
But, I’m so happy! I’ve missed them and y’all and your stories...
whew. This is the coop so far. The girls are spending their first night in it! I still have the fence to put up and the steps for the door. I had gaps on the side (front) and the door so I used old water hose screwed on to fill in the gaps. There are some gaps where the roof meets the frame...
We have a chick who has had a unique smell since we got her (day old). She smells faintly of tomato paste. Should we be concerned about this? She is very active. She was the first who figured out how to fly out of the brooder box. Do some chickens have their own smell?
I looked and read at all the designs. We then did inventory on what we had/could do. I started with the Home Depot design one but made it bigger (6x4). I can't post links yet. The Home Depot design can be found on the Garden Club page - build a chicken coop part 1.
In addition to making...
I have decided against the pre-fab coop kits because I don't want to replace it every year and we have predators.
What I have found is a plastic 8x10 shed for sale on craigslist that I was going to buy. I was going to fully enclose them meaning bottom also. If I bury the wire on bottom...
Hey! My children surprised me with 6 baby chicks for Easter! I am excited about raising chickens. We always had chickens when I was young. I was wandering any advice on what to keep handy for emergencies and sickness in the chickens. I have 3 red and 3 black. Do y'all have any suggestions...
