    Bielefelder thread!!!!

Is he (assuming he's a cockerel) a Bielefelder? Before getting feathers, he was a lighter red color with a white spot on his head. I'm stumped by his breed! (From McMurray's Layers Choice chicks, about 4.5 weeks old.)

Multi-Chick ID Help: Some mysteries to me, and some I'm second guessing.

I have more update pics! 1: Still not sure, but thinking an all white "Ameraucana" (EE) because of her legs and maybe a bit of face tufts developing 2: Unsure. McMurray has a few all black breeds that look like her. 3: Thinking maybe an Australorp. 4: No pic. She's definitely a Rhode...

Mcmurray Suprise Chick. What we thinking??

Mine has lightened up quite a bit from when it first arrived. It was much more red, but as soon as feathers starting coming in with the white, definitely lightened up. So hard to say what either of ours could be! (I ordered 15 choice layer pullets, and I don’t think this was the mystery chick...

Mcmurray Suprise Chick. What we thinking??

I also have a chick like this I got from McMurray and have been equally stumped. At 3 weeks, it looks like this (also attaching a pic of it the day I got it, and at about a week and a half old):

    3 Week Old Cockerel Breed

From McMurray Hatchery. I thought maybe one of their "Ameraucanas" at first (EE) because of the leg color, but the comb style is throwing me off because any I've gotten from them in the past have had small pea combs. I know it's still early, but any ideas? TIA!

Multi-Chick ID Help: Some mysteries to me, and some I'm second guessing.

UPDATE PICS: #1: Still not sure. Remains the largest chick. Much "meatier" than the others. It was a smoky color before getting feathers. Thought maybe a white rock or a white Jersey Giant, but it doesn't have the right kind of comb. Maybe just a huge white "Ameraucana" (name McMurray uses)...

Multi-Chick ID Help: Some mysteries to me, and some I'm second guessing.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/ameraucanas-easter-eggers-from-mcmurrary-plumage-color-variety.1366290/#post-22617729 One of my old posts that shows the EE's I received from the same hatchery before.

Multi-Chick ID Help: Some mysteries to me, and some I'm second guessing.

These are chicks I ordered in December that shipped directly from a hatchery that plans hatches. I've ordered from them numerous times and don't get "picked over" birds.

Multi-Chick ID Help: Some mysteries to me, and some I'm second guessing.

May I ask why you believe they're all EE's? Is it the leg color? I have four of the #6 chicks that all look identical with rose combs. #1 is quite a bit larger than the other chicks and has no patterning at all. #5 & #7 both have single combs, and the breed MM sells for their "Ameraucana" (EE's)...

Multi-Chick ID Help: Some mysteries to me, and some I'm second guessing.

Hi, all! I ordered 15 (+1 "mystery chick") of "Murray's Choice Layers" from McMurray Hatchery, and there are a few I haven't been able to positively identify. They are supposed to be pullets (except for likely the "mystery chick," which I also can't determine). I figured I'd post to see if...

    Mystery chicken killing young pullets

This one, in particular, happened while free ranging. She was totally normal when I let them out that afternoon, and even ate some blueberries from my hands in the yard, and an hour later, I found her laying on her side in the yard (with several other chickens nearby not acting startled or out...

    Mystery chicken killing young pullets

These are the week-old injuries as of today. They’re starting to close up, scabs are mostly gone, and the swelling over her eye is going down so it’s starting to open. Second pic is of her mostly uninjured side.

    Mystery chicken killing young pullets

When I say cuts, I mean more of a gash. Like, not a hole, but more of an irregular shaped gash. The survivor's face was also incredibly bruised and swollen around the eye where one of the wounds was. I can update with a photo later today, though they are healing now. They have two feeders that...

    Mystery chicken killing young pullets

It doesn't seem suspect that they all have cuts on the top of their heads and that out of 14 birds, all 4 have been the young ones? All of the attacks have been in daylight as well. The wounds aren't really puncture shaped, either. They're individual, centimeter-length cuts (which I was able to...

    Mystery chicken killing young pullets

I have a small flock consisting of 6 mature hens, a rooster, and (had) 7 pullets, about 4 months old... that is until they all started being taken out by one or more of the older chickens! Our coop and run are pretty large. We have had several larger flocks than the current size live there...

    Duckling Hatch: Normal?

Update: Two healthy babies! The one that had some of its yolk not yet absorbed seems to be doing well. Strong, and walking around the brooder, eating, drinking, pooping! Most of its yolk seems to have disappeared and what’s left looks dry and unproblematic. I think having almost a full 24 hours...

    Duckling Hatch: Normal?

Update: the third chick hatched out with some assistance. It was thrashing and pushing against the membrane, which I kept adding to Neosporin to and monitoring until there were no veins visible. Then, I basically freed its head and the duckling pushed out the rest of the way on its own...

    Duckling Hatch: Normal?

The first duckling didn't make it. It never was able to get out of the egg. This morning, I checked the coop again, and there was a second dead duckling, halfway out of its egg, with the rubbery membrane still attached. I now have a third duckling working its way from the egg, and it's looking...

    Duckling Hatch: Normal?

I applied a little coconut oil on the parts of the membrane that were dry, and put it back in with its mother. I plan to check again in an hour, and if nothing has changed, try to open it up a bit more. I didn't see any obvious blood veins with the coconut oil application, but I also tried to...
