Otherwise great rooster singling out 1 hen to abuse. What to do?

I agree I would not want to rehome him if this is a habit he is always going to have, but the thing I am trying to figure out at this point is whether he is doing this because there are 2 roosters here. He is the dominant rooster that mates with most of the hens. The other rooster has just a...

Otherwise great rooster singling out 1 hen to abuse. What to do?

I've got 2 roosters and 8 hens currently, mixed breeds. Both roosters are great and get along fine, however one of them started singling out one of my 2 lavender amerecaunas over the winter and constantly chased her off and swatted at her. I found her dead with no sign of illness or physical...

Pastey Butt and swollen vent in pullet just coming in to lay

Just cleaned her up again. Her vent does not seem to be quite as swollen or raw looking as yesterday. No cuts around the vent, the blood definitely appears to be coming out with her feces. I've seen a couple of bits of poops around the run today with a little blood in it just like the photo...

Pastey Butt and swollen vent in pullet just coming in to lay

I did a search and most topics on pastey butt are with baby chicks, however I have a 10 month old pullet that I think just started laying (it's either her and her sister or just one of them starting to lay). She has the classic build up of poop all around her vent and the area looks slightly...

Can saddles stay on all winter?

I figured a "layer" feed would have the proper amount of protein, interesting. I have 2 Spitzhauben pullets that are pushing 8 months now and have not started laying, while 2 ameracaunas that are the same age have been laying for 3 months now. I've been wondering why these 2 havent laid...

Can saddles stay on all winter?

I'm in New Hampshire and it gets brutally cold here Hmm I'm feeding an organic layer pellet, and actually at the moment everyone is getting organic chick feed because I currently have 2 juveniles in the flock. This is what they are generally fed...

Can saddles stay on all winter?

I have one hen with a very bare lower back and during the winter months when the birds are more confined, all of the hens seem to love taking turns pecking at the 2 rooster's lower backs as well, causing bleeding and broken feathers. It drives me absolutely nuts. I purchased saddles and have...

Hawk protection withOUT netting? Covers? Flash Tape? Help.

Interesting. So what do you feed them? How do you initially attract them? Any downsides to having a bunch of crows around all the time? I've got crows and ravens all around, but I wouldn't say they are regularly active in my yard, yet.

Mother killed first hatchling so I had to pull remaining 2 eggs. Looking for best advice as I havent done this before (pic of eggs)

Thanks for the pointers. They are from my Olive Egger (Ameracauna) hen. I'm not sure who the dad is...it's either an Appenzellar Spitzhauben or a Lavender Ameracauna

Made this thread earlier today and was advised to remove the remaining 2 eggs which have started to hatch...

Need quick advice! First time letting broody hen hatch eggs...first egg just hatched and very bloody-headed chicken laying on it's back (pic inside)

Thanks so much for the feedback. We took the remaining 2 eggs and put them in a brood box under a light with a damp cloth. I can hear them both chirping from inside the egg (is that pipping?) Both eggs are slightly cracked and flaking off a bit. I guess we will decide today whether to try...

Need quick advice! First time letting broody hen hatch eggs...first egg just hatched and very bloody-headed chicken laying on it's back (pic inside)

Well that first chick is dead. It had no fur at all from the neck up. I dont know if she did that or if it was born deformed? Will they discard an unviable chick? There are 2 more in the process of hatching under her now. Not sure whether I should leave them with her or take them away and put...

Need quick advice! First time letting broody hen hatch eggs...first egg just hatched and very bloody-headed chicken laying on it's back (pic inside)

Not sure what to do here. I noticed the first egg hatched an hour ago and she was sitting on the baby and I heard it chirp a couple of times. I checked on her 20 min later and she's not sitting on it and it's laying on it's back, barely breathing, with a bloody head like this. Anything I can do...

Give me a viable Eglu Cube alternative

Eglu GREATLY overstates the amount of birds you can (humanely) keep in the Cube. Like someone else has pointed out, it technically does not even have enough space for 2 medium sized birds. I currently have 4 medium sized birds (barred rocks and Auracanas) with the 9 foot run, and there is a lot...

Looking for advice on Coop + Run size for my situation (10-15 part-time free-range birds)

The nest boxes can be pulled out to allow for more floor space. I plan on pulling at least half of them.

Looking for advice on Coop + Run size for my situation (10-15 part-time free-range birds)

I am trying to decide between coop and run sizes. I live in New England and I have several acres of free ranging available to the birds, with a 2 acre field surrounded by woods on all sides. I typically let my birds out of their run 3-5 times a week, in the afternoons for a few hours, mostly...

A Management + Inury question regarding rooster with bloody quill and cannibal hens chasing him around

It did start shortly after winter and snow set in and the chickens were no longer free ranging every day. They all got along great before this though, very frustrating. I feel really bad for Gus the rooster, he's really sweet and treats the hens well - no aggression at all with them or us. I...

A Management + Inury question regarding rooster with bloody quill and cannibal hens chasing him around

So I had him isolated for almost 3 weeks now, in a separate coop right next to the hens. He was doing fine, no more issues, looked like the tail feathers cleaned up and some new ones were coming in. Decided to put him back in with the hens last night after they were all settled in. This morning...
