In the early 1900s one of my relatives made it her life's work to track everything down and publish it in a book. She made it all the way back to the 16th century. The book is 500+ pages. And she did all that before DNA tests and before computers!

Poland here, too! One branch of my dad's side of the family has been traced back to Gdańsk.

My northern European genes are particularly ill-suited to the desert but even if your ancestors came from an arid climate, the desert will still destroy everything you own - or you will pay a fortune trying to keep maintain and it.
