Very late, but he was originally named Meatball too! But when we adopted him from his original owners at 9months we decided to name him Meatloaf, because he was much more loaf-y and because of the musician, lol.
I’ve been told scalding them and hand plucking is the way to go; but I have yet to try it. I was thinking I’d just skin them and spatchcock them.
Went to check on them and Wrong End is still getting picked on. I don’t want to pull him as I don’t want him to be totally alone in the house. Quail...
My pug would be IMMENSELY pleased, my kids would be horrified.
The 9 year old told the 3 year old last week we were eating some of the quail and she’s still upset about it. :tongue
I did a bedding changeover in the outdoor pen and sprayed everything down with vinegar water, and put the two littles in, since it’s nice and warm today. Wrong End is a trooper and started exploring immediately.
We have two, possibly three new self-identified males today (one of the tuxes...
Ugh, that stinks! Did they make it to maturity & move to the outdoor pen? Mine seem more docile than their siblings, less active, and smaller. The poop thing is really frustrating, and I’m wondering if I should modify their pen so that they’re on hardware cloth, but I am worried that will be...
I think they’ll all be 4 weeks tomorrow! The smallest one is probably about half the size, the other one is probably 3/4 the size? They’ve gotten a bit bigger but not at the rate of their siblings.
I seriously keep looking at indoor rabbit pens but I don’t want more inside birds; my office...
Hmm, ok. I’ve tried putting them with the larger birds in the pen outside, but they seem stressed and either hide or race around (which inspires the other birds to chase them). Do I just stick them in the big kid pen and let them sort it out? I’m tired of them being in my office, and I’m going...
I have two quail from my hatch who haven’t moved outside because they’re roughly half the size of the other birds. They’ve been separated from them for over a week now; they’re eating and drinking and seem healthy. One of them was the one we thought was sick because he was thin and doing poorly...
It would be amazing if these dummies would use their heat lamp. Went to check on the outside quail this morning and they’re huddled up and cold looking on the opposite side from the lamp - and no way to set the lamp up in their preferred corner. :barnie It’s 46 at the moment because the sun...
Last update for here:
The Dummy Squad turned three weeks old today! The largest 9 have graduated to the newly finished outside pen. The minute I put one of the tuxes down he crowed! :duc
I took a few shots of them inside while cleaning out the brooder, as well as photos of their hilariously...
Had to separate the smaller 3 from the bigger group this week because one wasn’t thriving and I figured he’d want company in the mini brooder.
Well, I just had to add one of the pretty silvers to the group. It’s one of the ones the kids named (either Sunshine or Flower, I can’t tell the...
Sooo cute!! Ah, I just went to check mine for the night and the smell has officially reached unbearable levels. I don't wanna do x2 changes a day, so I think we're going to wrap up their pen, make sure it's protected from drafts and put heat lamps in it and see how they do in it (supervised)...
Ducklings are totally the worst. We went with quail instead of ducks because we basically just have tiny garden rather than a yard, and were told (and I believe it) that ducks would utterly ruin it, haha.
It drives me bananas because I also keep parrots, whose cages I try to keep super clean...
The dummy squad are still doing well. One broke it’s toe, but I’ve been keeping it clean with a poultry first-aid antiseptic. It looks like he might lose the very tip of his toe - not sure bc it started looking a lot better today/yesterday. Most of them turn two weeks old today. :)
It’s been in...
An update! All 13 are still doing well. They’re wrecking the bigger brooder; I’m wondering if I need an even bigger one, haha.
This amount of poop is just six hours after I changed the bedding - I’ve been turning it over in the afternoon and then dumping and replacing in the morning. The...
Same heat source, mine are doing the same dang thing.
Had to keep the lid on the brooder today when I went to change the feed/water. I imagine by tommorrow I’ll need to put them in their old brooder with the lid on to clean the soiled bedding out, as me working in there seemed to really inspire...
My guy bled a tiny bit, but it stopped as soon as I sopped it up with a paper towel. If the veins are contracted then it may just be a little leftover blood. It’s your discretion though, it was totally scary to do as it was my first time helping too.
