Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Yep! You're spot on. Mallard derived ducks can become infected and oftentimes don't show any signs and they're able to clear the virus. The not so wonderful part is that they tend to shed a higher load of virus than other birds.

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

I let some of my boys free range yesterday. I've been slack on changing shoes and I've got a wild Mallard hen that seems to be buddies with my bantam hens. All throughout the day, I go outside to find "Queenie" sitting right up against my bantam hens coop. The girls are oftentimes hanging out...

It'd be great to know if they are still aggressively testing. Obviously the number of cases has to be significantly lower at least, but this goes along with my previous grievances in the lack of information being shared.

Is this wild birds or backyard flock?

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

That's the important thing ❤️ I've been thinking about Avian Influenza a lot lately and I know it's probably not a possibility here in the USA, but I would much rather know how many samples are showing a negative result vs positive than only positive cases. Is the government giving us...

My daughter has a 5th grade class field trip this week and she's not even excited about it because that was our favorite part.

Yes. The building needs lots of repairs due to the humidity necessary for that structure. They'll be relocating some of the birds to other parts of the zoo and others will go to other zoos. They're going to take the building down. The building has tunnels under it and I'm assuming that increases...

Sadly the NC Zoo is actually closing their aviary permanently.

Whenever they kidnap other babies, they typically allow the parents to stay nearby, but definitely not close enough to interact or interfere. That's pretty incredible! The babies here are 2 sets and they're 3 days apart, so close but far enough apart for me to tell the difference. The youngest...

Wow! Did they hatch all of them or kidnap some? That's a lot of babies! Older geese are bad about kidnapping (gosling-napping) other goslings from younger inexperienced parents. It's so sad but sometimes those older geese know how to protect the babies better

I've got 8 goslings (Wild Residential Canada Geese) here and the Mallard hen is still sitting so it will be a little bit before I know what she hatches. I keep a very close eye on those goslings health wise. Seems like another Canada Goose pair is eyeing the island on my pond to start nesting 😩

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Wow! On top of houses?!?!?! That's crazy. I took this picture to send a friend the other day, asking her to "count the drakes". The other day we had 8, yes eight Mallard drakes here and their favorite places to hang out are on the island (pictured) or close by to my duck house. These boys are...

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

I keep hearing that all birds on the property will be culled if one bird on the property is confirmed to be infected with h5n1. I have three areas of flocks, with one of them being on the other side of the property. I suspect if they start to make exceptions here and there, it leaves a lot of...

They regularly check for AI and have for years now. This is one of the ways they procure samples at the beginning of migration

I thought the video was informative enough to get the point across. I imagine they're struggling mentally, even as business owners. This is a HUGE blow to their business and that is overwhelming for most people, even knowing they'll recoup some of the financial loss, the stigma of this being...

Then again, I'm sure some hunters hunt for the sport instead of dinner. It takes someone with the know how to make a teal tasty, but of course a lot of people do know how.

They're asked for a sample to be sent off for testing. I'm pretty sure they're not turning over the entire carcass of each bird. At least this is how I understood it.

Avian influenza found in South Carolina

Out of the 593 listed wild bird detections, 202 have been samples collected from dead birds (NOT hunter harvested). If this is the number of wild birds found dead, reported, and submitted for testing, can you imagine how many infected dead birds that aren't discovered or aren't submitted for...

Anyone in SD? Are there any obvious factors as to why they've had 25 confirmed cases of flock infections? 24 being commercial farms and one backyard flock of 200+. I believe it's mostly turkey flocks, but that's just awful and in one state!

Very helpful! Thank you. I used Lysol on the little poops whenever I found a tiny bird stuck in my Serama and Dutch coop. This was early on in this spread. I have Oxine AH and several packs of activator as well. Those were listed on the first couple of pages. Will go through and find other...
