I have a misting system in my coop because my girls are SUPER SPOILED!!! I also have a white cotton curtain on the side of the coop that gets the most heat. If it gets super-hot, I put a bit of Pedialyte in their water. Again. Super. Spoiled.
You are definitely not alone. I know quite a few people in the SFV area. I'm in Burbank and am very, very involved with the L.A. Urban Chicken Enthusiasts. We have meetups all the time in the L.A./SFV/SGV area.
Welcome!
Hey Mac84!!!
Welcome to BYC! The L.A. Urban Chicken Enthusiasts are having a meetup this weekend at my place in Burbank on coop building. There will be about 60 people there and if you RSVP, feel free to come!
Lots of people to answer questions!

Hey all! The next L.A. Urban Chicken Enthusiasts meeting is at my house in Burbank on April 14th. We'll be discussing coop building and we'll be raffling off a coop!

We recently rescued an abandoned Maltipoo and I am happy to report, she is great with the chickens. She sort of just ignores them.
And I agree with ellandeeranch. Character, fiber, protein.
First off, !
Second, I'm also in the SFV and last year I used misters and frozen soda bottles full of water for them to cuddle up to and they all did beautifully. I have EEs and GCs. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions. Also, you should definitely join the L.A. Urban...
Hi all. I cannot, for the life of me, find scratch or cracked corn in sizes less than 25 lbs. I could use about 10 lbs or so but I only have a few chickens and they just don't get that many treats.
Anyone know where I can find 10 lb bags of either scratch or cracked corn?
thanks!
I wish. **** Kabob is so dumb, she can't figure out how to get in and out of the coop when all the others are on the other side of the hardware cloth. She just runs around panicking. Of course she's way too wily for me to catch, so it results in me chasing her around forever!!!
Burbank is awesome. Husband and I bought a place here 6 years ago and we couldn't be happier. We live on an idyllic little suburban street with friendly neighbors and arching trees over the roads. Also, we are legally allowed 25 hens!
Also, Froggiesheins - Did you catch the other girls names...
Welcome SixHix and Kian.
I'm in Burbank with 4 girls although I'm probably going to get two more next month since we're going through eggs right now like crazy.
Here's a picture of one of my girls, Potpie, she's such a ham for the camera!
Yeah, I think flies are always going to be a bit of a problem. We've tried a few things and other than just keeping things as clean as possible, I don't know that there's really any good solution. They haven't been too bad this year - annoying but not obnoxiously so.
I do deep litter method and I've got to say, even on our 105 degree days with the mister on, which you'd think would be the really stinky days, we couldn't really smell anything. Maybe we're lucky and our chicks poop don't stink, but I have to say, I've always been happy with the lack of odor...
I'm in Burbank! You might want to consider joining the L.A. Urban Chicken Enthusiasts on Meetup.com. We have stuff in and around the Valley all the time.
OK - Manuel is an awesome coop builder who posts on Craigslist. He is out of Pico Rivera and he is great. A bunch of folks from the LA Urban Chicken Enthusiasts have used him and he is building something for me right now. I'll give you his info if you're interested.
