Anyone have any Speckled Sussex for sale? (now or in the future). I would love some chicks but we could take pullets, or hens. (maybe even a trio with a roo). We live in North Alabama but can drive as far as Birmingham.
I have a dual purpose flock for that reason: eggs and table. Come Spring time I will be looking for some Barred Rock hens, pullets, chicks or eggs....Perhaps we can talk in a couple of months. I am a little north of you but that might be a good excuse to go to the beach....
Does anyone in Alabama raise Barred Rocks (or any of the Rocks)? I will be looking for some come spring time. I would prefer to get from a breeder rather than a hatchery.
If your chickens have shelter from the wind and rain I don't think you can get too cold here in the deep south for healthy adult chickens. ;) That is not to say you shouldn't prepare for cold weather.
I provide plenty of shade, cool dirt to dust bath in and plenty of water like the others said. In the summer they all retreat under the trees where there is plenty of shade. I have yet to lose one to heat even here in the deep south of Alabama. I also have coops that open up with lots...

It is my understanding that we are on a stop movement and that birds were not to be moved but then I was at Tractor Supply today and they were selling chicks. I personally will not let anything on my property right now, especially since I already have birds. I was hoping to move a few birds...
I understand. My biggest stressor is that I have an African Gray that I have had for almost 35 years. I don't want to risk him at all. He is inside, away from the chickens, and we wash hands after coming in from the barn. Add to that that my children both have a beloved chicken. I can't...
Any one have information on what happens if it comes to your area? I have a small closed flock (not bringing anything in) but I live close to some chicken houses (not mine). MY concern is if one of them gets tagged, what will it do to my flock. I also have an inside bird and do not want to...
We are cold but the roads are fine around North Alabama. I hate schlepping water in winter so I splurged by buying a big heated watering bucket. I plug it in only when it is cold for more than a day and then I alternate my chicken waters which float in it, and thaw. I simply go out in the...
