Running a drain line around the coop is a great idea here. We also think light is important, so have things set up so the interior of the coop gets lots of daylight from the sides, but has some shade from above.

Can you report your neighbor to the city where you live? That situation is one of the many reasons lots of places don't allow chickens.

Regarding using cedar shavings for bedding, or even coop building materials: I believe it is the fumes, not the dust, that people are concerned about. But I gather the concern has been exaggerated. Lately I've been reading from lots of breeders who use cedar either as bedding or as building...

I think the issue here is the damage a rooster might do to little kids, not the stress the kids might do to the bird.

Anyone know/have a good little petting-zoo type farm near-ish to Portland that has chicks and welcomes kids? One of my facebook friends has a young daughter that would love to go to a farm to see some chicks, but I'm not really set up for kids. For one thing, my chicks are broody raised and...

I can not get the bird as far as Eugene/Springfield. The furthest south would be Woodburn if the timing works out perfectly as the vet I'll use to get the required health certification for the bird to enter California is in Woodburn. But the timing on that would be tricky. More likely transfer...

Wilco is having its Purina-tie-in Free Chick Day on March 21 ... buy a 50 lb bag of Start & Grow or Flock Raiser, get 5 free Cornish X chicks (limit of 5 per customer/10 per family). They also host workshops on raising chickens at many (all?) of their locations, and advertise there will be a vet...

Awesome offer! We do broody-hatch & raise our chicks, and so far haven't had a problem with cocci, but now that I'm hatching "good" birds I do want to be able to jump on ANY problem before it is a disaster.

Is summer liquid something a person can pick up at a farm store like Wilco? Thanks spellcheck! I tried to type Sulmet.

We haven't had a problem with it here yet, either. "They" say it is extremely resistant to disinfecting agents, so very difficult to remove from an environment once it's there. I think maybe we haven't had issues with it here mostly because we've only had birds on the property for a few years...

There was one rose comb cockerel ... and a few with the "lacing" of the Wyandottes (we have Silver Laced males & females, and Gold Laced females).
