Hi & welcome to the thread.
Sounds a nice set up you have.
I'm also a breeder of meat birds and can tell you that's there's some real good threads going on the Meat bird section.
Just changed the leg tags in the 4 "special" Marans chicks so I can keep an eye out for a cockerel from a very dark egg and look like I will have 3 to choose from :clap
There in the stable next to the Labrador pups
It's all go
Feathering up nicely for 2 weeks old.
Yeah, I love the idea of Ducks & Geese but with Great Dane sized poo I will have to pass.
Yes forecast said rain would start at 3pm today, so I had my day planned out.
11.30 the heavens opened, so never mind
Oh no isn't that just typical.
It's definitely been a cockerel year for me !!
My Wyndotte bantam chicks , I have 4 cockerels & 1 Pullet!!!
And my Marans are looking like about 10 cockerels and 5 Pullets :he
Tell you the truth I just leave them to get on with it.
Then if after 3, 4 or 5 chicks have hatched and there is a break in the other eggs hatching I will take the hatched chicks into the brooder and leave the eggs to all start again.
Although sometimes I've come down in the morning and had...
@timon , thehatch rate was very good although fertility was only about 70%.
Timing wasn't the best I got the eggs right after the hot spell so they were on/off lay a lot and half the eggs were over a week old.
So given all that I'm happy :thumbsup
Yes mine are English Cuckoo Marans.
The only reason I'm buying in eggs is for a new cockerel, so it's a risky business :fl
The guy breeds for big breed standard birds which I like, as well as dark eggs and his strain is half related to mine so should make for a better match.
This is the colour...
i travel and pick eggs up whenever possible, I have some Marans eggs due to hatch end of the week I went to Lancashire for them.
Last hatch this year for me.
Although I've said that twice before
