We had a similar experience, but it appeared the raccoon dug a little here, there, and lots of small holes. I guess smart enough to realize there really wasn’t anything there.
It’s my understanding SVB aren’t out west. So, you can stake the squash to grow vertical and better airflow but...
Low in the 40s last night through Friday. Chillier than I’d like, but, it’s not too low for most things.
We space them out only enough to put small tomato cages around them. So the cages touch. They are that close together. In a raised bed, we usually skip the middle spot for a little more...
@Swiss, Sue is right! Peppers like to be a bit crowded. In our raised bed (4’x16’), we plant 3 rows, and 13-14 lengthwise. This year we also planted them tight in the large bed: two rows, then a narrow path, 2 more rows… narrow path. I had already been crowding them before I found this...
Bean towers are strung. Need to plant some more bean seeds.
Following the carrot video (posted by @Smokerbill i recall), I soaked carrot seeds in water for a few days. Today made cornstarch gel and mixed in the carrot seeds. Then, using a plastic bag, spread them in a trench. Usually one...
Watered the garden, and then prepped and planted the trap crop squash plants in pots. They are near, but away from the main squash. Hoping that the trap crops draw them in instead of attacking the squash I want. Last year the summer squash produced very well despite being attacked heavily by...
Normally this is the time we are planting: Memorial Day weekend thru early June. With the nice weather and lack of frost…we planted earlier, and are mostly planted at this point, with only a few things left.
One reason we wait us bc we have a few hundred acres of farm field to our west and a...
Baby girl (7 weeks) next to her mom. She already weighs just over 14 lbs!! (Birth weight was 1lb, 11ounces).
Borage is flowering.
Garlic is creating scapes
Scapes were cooked with fresh spinach from the garden!
Thanks! He is right- you really need to baby the carrot seeds to get them to germinate. We have pretty good success with carrots, but we do try to keep them moist daily until true carrot leaves appear, so it’s a task that can get forgotten. I may try this for the last section of carrots...
In typical Acre4Me style, I crammed in 4 mounds for watermelon plants. Lack plastic on the mounds bc they do like to be warm. They can spread out in the path.
Then, we went to the woods at a friend’s family farm. The farm is being sold bc the dad passed away and the large business next...
Poppies are blooming.
Yesterday worked all day planting and working in the garden, more of the same today.
We got all 80+ pepper plants planted. Need more small tomato cages, but the cages are strangely expensive right now.. so might go with posts and string.
Today, we will focus on...
Hope all goes well!
Copper plus the fruit tree mineral oil…spray in fall, again in spring. I did that this year and the trees are definitely looking better. One site where I was reading up on this problem indicated to spray at leaf fall ( in the fall), and they actually knocked off/removed...
Agree! We grew Trombocino one year- VERY prolific. Worth the space and they grew very fast -can pick them the day they flower for a reasonable size squash, but essentially no seeds yet.
Worked on one large garden bed today.
Cattle panels for winter squash and cucumbers, summer squash, carrots, and cowpeas.
Lemtils Look great:
Strawberry bed with garlic. The garlic is just starting to produce scapes!
Baby girl is only 6 weeks!! Here she is next to her aunt!
I...
Foliar fed the trees today. Perfect morning for it. Lots of fog.
One tree peony flowered! Very pretty! They were planted in the fall. Since these are grafted, they may bloom the first year.
Can you get a helper, one on each side of the tree, but at edge of drip line. Using poles, attach deer netting to the poles, then up and over the tree to the other side. 8ft deer netting should well cover top, then add additional to uncovered sides if needed.
My FIL grows cherries, but now...
Not sure! We provide ours with loose goat minerals, hay and textured goat feed (it’s contains pellets and whole grains). The kids are eating the loose minerals just fine, so, maybe the dirt smells good? It’s only the dirt from the garden beds (mostly empty still).
