I buried the whole egg, shell, yolk and white. I crushed it in the bottom of the hole and mixed it with dirt before refilling the hole. I've read that it helps, but it might just be a myth. Worth a try.
Woody stem herbs prefer rocky, well draining soil. I'm going to make a new raised bed...
About pruning and tying your squash to posts, do you think it's hard on the plants losing so many of the big leaves? Seems like it would lower the amount of energy the plants would produce from the sun/photosynthesis.
Also, I wonder how one of those elastic Ace bandage wraps would work for...
I just buried a nasty looking whole egg under a tomato plant today. I buried an egg underneath a different tomato last week and nothing's dug it up... yet. LOL
I picked a big handful of Russian red kale leaves this morning. For me, not the chickens.
I started soaking some Danver's half long carrot seeds in water this morning and will plant them in a few days using the cornstarch gel planting method.
Also...
Plucked the lower suckers off of the tomato plants. A couple are starting to create blossom buds. All seem to be doing well in spite...
Thanks @Acre4Me . I'm just hoping that the pepper plants are not permanently stunted.
I just strung up some rope a few feet inside the garden fence (6 to 7 feet high) to try and prevent the deer from jumping in. It worked last year, so it should work again.
Something has been nipping leaves...
I'm a little concerned for my peppers. They've been in the garden for a few weeks now and have endured several upper 30's- low 40's nights. The tomatoes are looking good and growing, but the peppers are just standing still.
Next year my peppers won't go into the garden until after June 1st...
I'm just about ready to try the soaking/cornstarch gel method to plant carrot seeds in my garden. I need to start soaking some seeds in water today.
Hope it works out for us!

I was going to start installing my drip irrigation system a few days ago but found that I still needed a few...
I picked 6 big red Russian kale leaves this morning. Chopped and wilted them in breakfast sausage grease and ate with four fried eggs for breakfast.
And last night I had a salad of the red merlot leaf lettuce I got as a free packet from Baker Creek. It was a little on the bitter side, but...
My marigold seedlings were getting cramped so I transplanted them into a larger container. I used the lower 3 inches of the box my new coffee pot came for the two dozen infants.
Zinnias are doing great since I up-potted them last week. Most are in little 6 section seeding cells. Big enough...
The last of my drip irrigation system arrived today. Well, almost all of it.
This morning I decided to get a watering timer. It's very basic, just an analog timer, similar to an egg timer. Twist the dial to set the watering time and it shuts itself off when the timer hits zero. It will be here...
I am (and my garden is) ready for some warmer weather. These are good temperatures for lettuce and brassicas, but my tomatoes and peppers would appreciate some heat!
I have the daikon bucket thinned down to 5 plants now. I just used the weed-tea fertilizer I made for the first time, watering the daikon with a 20 to 1 dilution of the fermented liquid.
I have some mole activity in one of my raised beds. I take a more "live and let live" attitude with the little diggers. They've never really done much damage, other than occasionally tunneling under rows of newly planted seeds, and the seeds usually still come up where they were disturbed.
My...
Planting pre-germinated carrot seeds suspended in cornstarch gel out of the corner of a plastic bag. I'm going to try this method next time I plant carrots.
I ordered a few more things for my drip irrigation setup. Shutoff valves and assorted fittings for 1/4" and 1/2" tubing and a 200 mesh/75 micron water filter. A few things arrived today, and the plan is pretty well worked out in my mind.
Took a walk around the garden and all looks good. I laid the floating row cover directly on top of the little brassica plants I put in the garden yesterday.
I need to put up a simple framework to keep the row cover from touching the plants. Someday. Takin' it easy, enjoying the rain today.
