I've been researching the various automatic (PVC) feeders for chickens, and so many people complain about their chickens ripping out feathers, the feed gets wet, the chickens crawl inside and die.....which one is the best for most flocks of adult chickens?

Does anyone have suggestions as to how to water if you're concerned about leaks in the chicken house? I thought about putting a metal overflow like I have under my hot water heater, with a hose that would take care of any problems....in case I wasn't home to notice right away.
I'm thinking of building my coop in a more shaded area, and have about 20' to reach the chicken yard - any suggestions on a way to make a "tunnel" or other run from the chicken house to the secured area? Otherwise, I might just build out over the chicken yard and plant some fast-growing trees....
