Tickled to finally have some BLRW chicks in my coop! My first Wyandottes :) Hatched 6 under a broody, and am having so much fun watching how they feather in! Three are dark, two very light, and one is about halfway between the others, color wise. They hatched May 2nd.
I use the 16% no corn/soy layer feed from Patriot (in Winlock, WA). I have good luck, and hens seem to like it. Good eggs production. I did not like the max grow they produce as chick starter. Too much fines and birds wouldn't eat it. I suggest trying one or two bags before committing to see how...
If you're talking to me, nope. I do not have an Ameraucana roo. I just hatched eggs from some hens that came from a breeding flock. Maybe in the future...
Anyone know if Lady's Thumb (Persicaria vulgaris -in the Knotweed family) is toxic to chickens? It's a common garden weed. Looks like this: http://www.illinoiswildflowers.info/weeds/plants/lady_thumb.htm
Yes. The blue color in the pure Ameraucana is like most others in that they do not breed true. Here is a nice little genetics/color helper I found in another thread. Note: it's roo x hen.
Black roo x Black hen= 100% black
Black x Blue = 50% black 50% blue
Blue x Blue = 25% black 50% blue 25%...
I ended up with only 2 fertile eggs, and both hatched! I did nit use a hygrometer, and only turned 3 times per day. Boy, was I surprised to get two happy, healthy, well formed chickies!
I know, right?!? Love the blues! It's sad the blues dint breed true. Below is a good layout I found for getting blues from the blue/black/splash color birds. Guess I need a splash roo to cover my black hens!
Black x Black = 100% black
Black x Blue = 50% black 50% blue
Blue x Blue = 25% black...
My first babies! Mom is blue Ameraucana from Oregon spring swap, and dad is black Ameraucana. Set 7 eggs, only 2 were fertile. So tickled they both hatched! And excited that they are both blue!

They arrived yesterday! Set 9 Ameraucana eggs. Only 2 were fertile... Both hatched! I haven't seen them yet as we were gone and they spent "lockdown" and hatched at a friends.Drove me crazy not to be there, but glad his 5 year old got to see the fun part :) A very easy process in the Brinsea...

Just discovered these beautiful birds, and bought three blue 9 week olds... Maybe all pullets? What personality! Love these birds! The only downside is that they are low on the pecking order with all the chickens in their age group. Maybe I should consider building a breda pen and get more, and...
Took a gamble setting 9 eggs from two hens I purchased on April 27th. I didn't have a broody hens, so purchased an incubator to see if I could hatch any fertile eggs. Thank goodness I have a couple young roosters to help provide me more hatching eggs in a few months!
I candled on day 6, & could...
Awesome! Yep, I know it CAN happen, but isn't too common with the marans X ameraucana X leghorn mix my birds derive from. You're lucky! My straight combs OEs are just 7 weeks, so time will tell.... I will keep them either way! :D Your birds are beautiful! Do you know what varieties were used to...
I just noticed that one of my OE babies, 6 weeks, has adorable puffy cheek feathers! Flippin' adorable! She looks just like a black copper marans otherwise. I don't know HOW I missed this until now!
I think the best part of the mutt aspect of OEs is that you never quite know what you'll get...
