    scratch grain addict rooster

I have been raising chickens for many years now, but this is a new one. I have always fed my chickens scratch grains in the winter months along with their regular feed (20% protein). They know it is a special treat and we refer to it as "candy" and crazy enough they recognize that word and what...

    neighbors new flock

My neighbor just bought new pullets yesterday and released them into her yard. Our yards share a 5-foot fence and has worked well. My chicken house and hers are both near the fence. Yesterday her new chickens were EVERWHERE. At one point I found one in my chicken house eating from my feeders. I...

    Fox attacked my ducks

She looks so good!!! Such a beautiful bird. Those pin feathers can bleed a lot and get gross. We took in a clutch of 6 leghorns last spring that had really bad pecking wounds. Some were questionable if they were going to make it. The pin feathers were some of the problems. Once a bird sees red...

    Fox attacked my ducks

The vetricyn is what I use on my girls. It works great, so good job there! Both my neighbor and I have chickens and last year his flock was almost wiped out by a dog, he lost a few but 2 survived. One looked really bad. Thought for sure she was not going to make it. But to everyone's surprise...

Put your cold weather tips in comments!!

Down here in Texas! Wood floor with deep pack litter. Keep a 5-gallon bucket inside house for emergency water (learned that the hard way). Moving blankets are our bests friends. Use them everywhere, on walls and doors to keep drafts out! (Harbor Freight carries them for cheap)

    winter/summer housing

Hello, have a question. Been raising chickens for many years now but have recently build a new chicken house completely different than I have had in the past. I live in the coastal Texas reign, remember the drought and triple digits. Now with freezing weather, we are not accustomed to this new...

    Rooster attacking hens

He will be 6yrs old this coming spring. I have 13 hens plus the roo. Their house is 13x9. The girls don't seem to fight him back. I think they are shocked by his behavior. And it is not one specific hen, he goes after any one of them. He seems to be fine out in the yard. I forgot to mention in...

    broken eggs in nest box

I know I have an egg eater and I do try and collect before they feast on them, but on days I am away from home I cannot get to them fast enough. My question is, the eggs that have not been broken but have yolk coated on them, are they safe to eat and sell if they are cleaned up? I normally just...

    what to feed roosters

I have a 14 wk old Ameracauna rooster who is a bottomless pit. Is he missing something in his diet? He is on a chick finisher crumble. When my hens start to lay can he eat the layer pellets as well?
