    BYC Café

Today we helped a friend clean out/rearrange his pole barn. I'd guess it's 30x40...? He has a '57 Chevy that was parked against the back wall, blocked in by stuff/junk/things he can't or won't get rid of. When we left, the Chevy was parked facing the door, and some of the stuff was gone. We...

    Vanilla Extract Question... ANYONE???

@Ricflyfish, this thread is 14 years old, so you're not likely to get an answer. These members haven't been on BYC in many years.

What do you like to forage? Calling all foragers!

That's exactly how I catch them too. I have a "bug jar," and when the chickens see me carrying it, they know what it holds! Happy chickens!

    The Wally-Gee Bee Journey 🐝

Dang! One of our hives was building cross comb. We ripped some apart when we pulled the frame, not knowing it was there. They. Were. MAD! They were dive bombing us, and we did the little bit we had to do and got the heck out of there!

Question of the Day - Thursday, June 6th, 2024

I am right handed, but two times in my life, I've injured my right hand and had to write, etc. with my left hand. Try brushing your teeth with "the other hand."

What did you do in the garden today?

Getting some rain, thank goodness! We're at about 40% of our usual rainfall, so we really need it.

    The Honey Factory

Pardon my ignorance. Are you talking about frames with plastic foundation? That's all I have. I can't picture what you're describing using a plastic foundation. I'd heard that plastic foundation had crappy wax from the manufacturer, so I was going to rub some of the (very little) wax I had that...

    The Honey Factory

I did some looking online... I think what I'm seeing is called cross comb. We did scrape it off, and realized it was full of developing brood. Oh, wow, did the bees get mad. And I don't blame them. That was in Hive #1. Hive #2 is a split from #1, and we didn't see cross comb. But #1's bees...

    The Honey Factory

Oh man. I hope they build "real" comb... Does it make a difference if it's a super above a queen excluder? Hubby really (really-really) wants to get some honey this year. We've put a bunch of money into this venture, and we have not taken any honey yet. I think I need Ed, my bee guy, to...

Help with ideas for cluttering a run:

I like having things that chickens can get up on. This gives them more "places to be." I have a log that I put some "legs" on, and it's a favorite place to hang out on, and dust bathe under. Also, the smaller birds can hop/jump higher than the full grown ones. When doing my last integration...

    Any Home Bakers Here?

Jared, that is way cool! Pick something you can make a few practice runs on, to get your technique dialed in. Pick something people (judges) will like to eat. And you too, if you're going to be "practicing." :) Pick something that will look pretty. I think peach cobbler checks every one of...
