    Help deciding breed layers

Welcome to BYC! Even though it says it's for nonlaying hens, I would keep them on it since you have a rooster, you'll just need to provide oyster shells on the side. I feed mine kalmbach flock raiser, but the Purina is fine too. Keeping laying hens on flock raiser won't hurt anything as long as...

    Cat attack, please help

That does sound more like a rat or a raccoon than a cat to me as well. With so little to go on though there is no telling. I would if possible bring them inside at night but the hardware cloth should solve that issue anyways. Regardless I wish you luck with the rest of your chicks!

    Why are my birds dying

How are they acting off? Are their bums clear of poop? Are their droppings normal? Is everyone eating and drinking normally?

Question of the Day - Tuesday, June 4th, 2024

The one that surprised me the most is a bobtailed cat. I initially thought she was a bobcat but once I got a better look at her and her kittens I realized she was a feral bobtailed domesticated cat

Anyway to stop a crowing hen?

Unfortunately there's no way to make a chicken be quiet. The only thing I can suggest is to bribe the neighbors with eggs if you're worried

Newbie facing fowl pox + pictures

I would also suggest vaccinating the rest of your flock, you can order the vaccine from valley vet and it's cheap and easy to use. Won't help your sick bird but it'll keep everyone else from getting sick

When to cull a rooster showing signs of aggression?

Another thing is human aggression can also be genetic so if you breed him, his sons are more likely to be human aggressive, I would cull him personally, there's a small chance behavior modification could work for him, but he has already shown he has bad genes in regards to temperment so this...

Scary egg-eater has called my bluff

It's extremely unlikely it's a dominance issue, chances are it's a nutrition issue. If they're knocking the container over, I'd try a small hanging feeder with the oyster shell. It's normal for them to only occasionally eat the oyster shells, they'll only take what they need when they need it...

Scary egg-eater has called my bluff

I would switch to a 20% feed and cut out the bsfl for a while. She might be eating eggs 'cause she's not getting enough protein. Generally it's better to have calcium on the side so birds who need them can have it while birds that don't won't be have too much

Question of the Day - Sunday, June 2nd, 2024

I don't wear makeup ever. I don't have time for stuff like that in the morning and honestly just plain don't care. I'm passionate about many things, but fashion isn't one of them

Question of the Day - Monday, June 3rd, 2024

I don't ride horses, I've been on a horse exactly 3 times when I was a kid and hated it each time - nothing bad happened, I just don't like being up that high especially while moving. Hence I was one of the minority of little girls who didn't want anything to do with horses

Is this snake in my coop harmful

Fair point, it's better to know the species of snake you're dealing with, but it is a good quick and dirty rule to tip one off if a snake *might* be venomous

Is this snake in my coop harmful

So that rule only applies to snakes in the States and coral snakes are the exception. Otherwise, pretty much every other venomous snake in the States is going to be a viper of some kind and those do have triangular heads. Outside the States all bets are off and this rule will not apply at all

Official BYC Poll: Are Chickens Easier or Harder To Raise Than Dogs/Cats?

Once all the infrastructure is taken care of, they're less work than my dog or my cat. When I was sick and couldn't do much, I still had to let my dog out, feed my cat and tend to the chicks that were being brooded inside but I knew the adult hens would be just fine for a few days as I always...

Official BYC Poll: What Is Your Perspective On Chickens For Meat

I don't eat my flock 'cause that's not why I got them but if I did raise meat birds or wound up with a mean rooster I would eat them. My laying hens though are my pets and thus have names and I have a rule of not naming anything I plan on eating. I also consider laying hens to generally be too...

Can we take off heat lamp?

I would start leaving it off during the day at least. You can turn it back on at night for the next few days if you want, but they may not need it. Just listen to them, they'll tell you if they're too cold

Correct Feed for Hen with Chicks?

The chick feed with oyster shells on the side is the way to go, once you start integrating them into the flock everyone can eat either chick starter or all flock/flock raiser with oyster shells on the side for anyone who needs it and I'd keep them on that until at least everyone is laying or...
