    Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

I know traditions, right!! I heard this old story about the newlywed who wanted to bake a roast and used her mothers recipe. It called for cutting the roast in half and baking it in two pans. She asked her mother why and the mother said "That's how Mama did it." She called her grandma and...

Congrats on the bucks. When I was a little girl, I would dig through my mother's jewlery box. there was a deer ear in it and I thought it was odd, but never questioned it. As an adult, I was going through family pics and found an old one of my Dad holding his rifle with an 8 point buck. I...

Ya know, everything bad that happens, happens to my family during the holidays- like the universe is trying to tell us something. A distant uncle passed away Sunday and the burial is tomorrow in South Texas. Only immediate family going, but it does put a pall on Thanksgiving dinner. Again-...

That is pretty funny. The baby barn is about 6 feet from the big girl coop- just a different enclosure where small pullets are safe from pecking. Most of the time, the babies bed down outside the baby barn door and I put them in their enclosure after dark- until one day, they decide to go into...

With my luck, the cat would cull my favorite fat hen. Twice now, I have had a very special favorite in the flock and a predator got them. :( I turned my littles out to free range and they are the most shy chickens I have had. They hang around the baby barn and do not stray far from it...

Well, today was wonderful- really almost like a tonic to my spirit. The temp mostly in the 70's. I edged the curb and the driveway until the weed eater batteries gave out (I have 2). I cleaned off the landscape stone sitting area in the back yard, got rid of leaves, dirt, ants, grass growing...

Thanks. I will look them up. Spring IS a new season. I don't spray because I do't want to eat chemicals.

Yeah, squash bugs. I should have let the chickens out into the garden, but didn't. What kind of perreinials do you plant to keep them down? I do intersperse marigolds among the tomatoes.

This is gorgeous. I have been wanting to do patio plants, but haven't had the courage. Now, I think I can fix up the containers this winter and plant in the spring. Thanks for the ideas.

I usually just get whatever yellow squash they sell at Walmart. Not sure of the variety. I have done this every year for about 5 years. Always have had good results. Since it is a raised bed, and there are two, I alternate beds every year - and fertilize both every year with chicken poop. The...

My tomatoes are looking great- have already picked a bunch. More ready to go. My watermelon is doing nicely- can't wait to bite into that thing. However, my squash sucked up and died on my - why? I water, but try not to overwater, the dirt was fertilized all fall and winter with chicken poop...

Has anyone seen the adds for the roller type of thing you put on top if the fence? When the cat tries to jump, the roller just rolls around and they can't get purchase to climb over. Maybe I could do that- no law preventing it- IF I can find it, afford it and install it and IF it works.

I agree - I had been just putting the daily food out in the mornings and they usually ate it 24/7- or something did- the dogs are not thin, so they are eating. I just try to touch each chore once and done- now I get to touch it twice. I will find out about electric fencing.

    Gardening for Old Folks (Adaptative)

I don't have a cat- the dogs would go berserk - as would the chickens. I do have neighborhood cats scaling the 6 foot privacy fence to get to the dog food and to use the raised vegetable garden as a toilet. Haven't figured out how to keep them out. Feeding the neighborhood is getting expensive...

Your whole garden is beautiful- I am pea green with envy. If I were 25 years younger and had the land, I would also have a big garden. Something about digging in the dirt gives me a lift and peace - very satisfying. I am going to let the hydrangea be what color it wants- this year. I bought...

My Hydrangea is finally blooming- white. Oh well, I can work on that color. It has never bloomed and it is 4 years old. My Rose of Sharon are doing great too- love them. No comment on the weeds and leaves- holiday weekends are for getting to those things.

We have the occasional skunk in the area, but the squirrels are horrendous. I used to think they were cute, now, just big rats with fancy tails. They go into the run area while the hens are free ranging and eat what ever is left of the feed. They also drink from the waterers. Grrrr.

I have that problem with moles- or are they voles? Anyway, just as soon as I get rid of one family, another takes it's place. This winter, I found 3 dead and dried moles under the pecan tree. In March I found one on the landing by the shed. Don't know what is killing them, but it is wonderful.
