Miscellaneous Meeps - Hatching my Dreams

Ugh, yeah, it does feel like that sometimes. Last year I was sure I had sooo many more cockerels than pullets because I had several batches in a row that were cockerel heavy, but then when I took stock of all the birds I had hatched in 2023, I was actually exactly 50-50 on them, 35 pullets and...

My girls never listen to me when I tell them this, either 😩 But hey, at least they aren't keeping you guessing for months! Those combs are pretty hard to deny!

Ugh, yes, I hate how hard it is to get good pictures through that double-layer lid of the Ovation!! :barnie Congrats on all the little ones!! :jumpy :love

Well, not necessarily! Recessive white bred to recessive white will only make more recessive white, so you could have a pen of them bred to SOP as well... ;) Reminds me of my Easter-egger hen, Fifi, when she was a baby. She was the floofiest little peep I'd ever raised! :love Thankfully, while...

Recessive white would be my first guess, it's pretty commonly carried in Silkies and Silkie-derived breeds like Satins. Definitely update as they fluff out and start getting their wing feathers, though!

On smooth feathering, it's pretty easy to tell leakage from base color. It's the silkied feathering that kind of helps it blend in. Apparently, it's pretty common for Silkies, especially females, to have silver leakage that just isn't noticeable as a result of this. The darkened cape and saddle...

Haha, definitely not making any guarantees on a pullet! But here's hoping! :fl I can't find any recent pictures of Nora that show what I'm talking about with her, but here is baby Nora (~2 months old) that shows what I'm talking about with that lighter patch on her chest. I don't know for sure...

Ah, yeah, then you'll have to wait a few weeks to know on that little one. Here's hoping for a pullet! :fl

Which parent was the Barred Plymouth Rock, the mother or the father? If it was the mother, then that should be a sexlinked cross and you should be able to tell males from females at hatch. 🙂

It almost looks like blue lavender, but the odds of both parents happening to carry lavender when it's pretty hard to come by in Silkies is pretty slim... My best theory otherwise is that it's a blue with heavy silver leakage. Silver leakage tends to blend into the base color with silkied...

Yeah, if there's clear areas in the egg still, then that sounds more like shipping damage. That's pretty odd that one of yours has the same look, though 🤔 Almost there. Hang in there, babies! :fl

They're all day 16 today? It wouldn't necessarily be detrimental to any of them to lock down that early, especially if there appear to be some that are drawing down. If you're able to lock down some of them and leave the others turning, that would probably be fine, too! Just keep an eye out for...

Haha, mine grab a toe occasionally, but thankfully not very often! My OEGB girls like to stand at my feet and poke-poke-poke forever at my ankles, though. 🤭 Were they about the right size the last time you peeked? How long ago was that? Draw down is a very sudden enlargement of the air cell...

Glad you weren't hurt too seriously! Yeah, the knee-high boots are pretty miserable in the heat. My legs are nothing but sweat in them in the summer, so I switch to sandals... even though that kinda leaves my legs and feet vulnerable to curious pecks and mean little fuzzballs 😅 It is pretty...

Yeah, sounds like the same thing as I did here. What the heck we were thinking!! 🤭 I hope you didn't end up hurt too badly by those spurs!! Thankfully, the Cochins don't really get spurs, so all I have to worry about is being kicked by a little ~2-pound rooster. And I usually wear...

Oh, I didn't intend to claim these if anyone else was wanting to, for the record! I just thought it was funny that your post basically said 'Bantams NO' 🤣

It is, especially since it's one I had meant to breed from. I have found that, to an extent, if they're going to be mean then they're going to be mean, but none of my other Cochins have ever been like this and this guy wasn't, either, until one specific event, which is why I firmly believe it's...

Funny, that's the opposite of my reaction to bantams 🤣 He was beautiful. Too bad his temperament didn't match his looks! I have one that's heading the same way, unfortunately. It was a mistake on my part that caused his behavior to change, so I feel bad for sending him to the freezer as a...

Yeah, if the mother is barred and the father is not, then male chicks would have head spots and female chicks would not. Sometimes with blues the head spot blends in a bit so it's hard to tell, but that baby has a pretty dark head and pretty clearly does not have the barring head spot. 🙂

Interesting, that does look very convincingly blue 🤔 I think that's going to have to be another wait and see baby, but the most likely explanation is an egg mix-up, as Chonkers should not be able to produce blue with any of the breeds you listed.
