What did you do in the garden today?

What do any of you do to keep birds from eating the cherries off your cherry trees? I have my first ever real potential crop of sour cherries. The trees are a little too tall for us to put nets over without damaging the trees, I think. Does the reflective tape stuff work?

What did you do in the garden today?

I'm sad to read that people are having trouble with Baker Creek seeds. I've recommended them for several years. I haven't been paying attention to which company/germination rates on my seeds, but I will now. A lot of the seed I've planted so far is saved seed.

I reclaimed (9) 6' fence posts today, and some 2x3 welded wire fence. I'll feel it in my back tomorrow, I bet. I planted some "yard long" asparagus beans today. We'll see how they do. I've never planted yard long beans before, and I'm intrigued!

What did you do in the garden today?

Very good information to know, thank you! Our basement is the only room that would qualify for reliably being under 72 degrees in the summer when I'd have produce to FD. It can be damp down there; enough to run a dehumidifier at times. Does a freeze dryer make a room more humid?

What did you do in the garden today?

Yesterday, I tweaked something in my right hip, but didn't think anything of it, because nothing hurt. Until this morning. Just call me Ol' Gimpy Sally. I got the fence redone on the heavy soil garden. It looks much better. Now I have scraps of ok-ish janky-ish fence that I can use for putting...

What did you do in the garden today?

When I've pulled up "missed" onions from the year before, the bulb is nothing but mush. The tops might look great, but the bulb is bleah. These were planted as sets last year.

What did you do in the garden today?

I use them for hardening off my starts. Pictures to explain: They're protected from any critters, and The sheets protect them from the sun when they're first out, and from cold temps at night.

What did you do in the garden today?

Chilly, grey day. I got another 15' of clay dirt dug out of the perimeter. I should have taken a "before" picture. :hmm I'll be getting the dog crates out tomorrow to begin hardening off the starts in the green house. We have mid-high 70s for the next 8 days, and lows in 50s. If we're...

What did you do in the garden today?

Does anyone here grow chard? I am not having much luck with it sprouting. I think I have 2 out of the row of 10-15 seeds that I planted a couple weeks ago. :hmm

What did you do in the garden today?

I'm glad it does something good. :)If it just stayed out of my gardens... One thing I've wondered about... the field is full of brome, and other grasses, and hasn't been disturbed in over 30 years (as long as we've lived here) and probably decades longer. So that soil has had decades of grass...

What did you do in the garden today?

Let me know if you need some "starts." What do you grow it for? Is it for grazing? I bet it holds soil together well. It sure does here.

What did you do in the garden today?

More digging and weeding. And, I found asparagus beetles. I have never seen them this early. But everything is about 2 weeks ahead of normal, so I guess they are too. Add another daily chore to my list: Debugging the asparagus. Yeah, I need another half hour chore to do.

What did you do in the garden today?

THIS is why I hate brome. Those white pointy root looking things? Those are called stolons, and are underground stems that can travel up to 3' or more, looking for a place to pop up a new plant. They don't pull up well in heavy soil. The plant breaks free, leaving those to keep growing.

What did you do in the garden today?

I would trade brome grass for Johnson grass any day. Maybe I'd say differently if I had Johnson, but brome is my number 1, most pain in the butt, hand, and back weed! If I didn't have brome, I would have at least 50% less weeding to do.

What did you do in the garden today?

How old are the trees? I have two Montmorency (sour) cherry trees. Two years ago, they had a few blooms, at age 2 or 3; no fruit. Last year, they had "lots of blooms!" (I thought), and maybe half a dozen fruit, which the birds got. This year, I bet they had thousands of blooms. I'm thinking...

What did you do in the garden today?

I dug a lot of heavy clay today. I'm digging out the perimeter of the heavy soil garden, and I got one of the short ends done. The other short end is where the grape vines are, and I dug that area a few weeks ago. That's what gave me the idea. I also split 3 sunflowers that were in one pot into...

What did you do in the garden today?

These will be the only C. Pepo squash I plant. They're both bush varieties, and I wonder if it would matter that much if they crossed. I'll see which I like better, save seed from one to plant next year. And compare that to the originals. I bet I'll have plenty of seed left over.

What did you do in the garden today?

Has anyone saved zucchini seeds to plant the next year? I'm planting both Black Beauty and Fordhook varieties, which are bush types. If they do well, I'd like to save the seed. However, there are enough seeds in the packet for at least 2-3 years.:)

What did you do in the garden today?

Hubby has put about 150 gallons of water into the water cube up by the heavy soil garden. I can water the other garden with the hose, but that one is too far away from the house. He says, "July Hubby will thank May hubby for doing it how." :lau

What did you do in the garden today?

I can feel that I worked yesterday. My hands and lower back are checking in. "Hey, person, can we take it easy today? Maybe just go to the store, the bank?" I think I'll listen.
