We are planning on using an old trampoline frame to construct a run for our first flock. What should we do for the ground? We live in Alabama, so we experience lots of rain at times (like now) and other times it’s dry as a bone. We are covering the whole run in hardware cloth and I was planning to leave the top uncovered other than the hardware cloth so they can get plenty of sunshine. Should we plan to cover the top in some sort of solid roofing? We will be letting them free range when we are able to be outside with them if that matters.

How is drainage at the site of the run? If you get a lot of rain, a roof might be something helpful vs. leaving it uncovered. Chickens really don't need plenty of sun (they need ambient light in order to lay but would do better with more shade than sun, especially if it gets hot in summer).

It gets super hot here in the summer. We are planning to build in the coop and run in the most shaded corner of our yard (we have lots of trees, so very shady). And water runs away from that area. It’s just really soggy right now from the amount of rain we’re getting at the moment. And that’s with our little covered coop/run from Tractor Supply.
