I don't know if I would say smarter- they are just closer to the gaps that they sneak through, so they know their limits better than we do.
I would say they know more about what they can/can't do than we know of what they can/can't do.
I would say that judging by all the not smart things...
I have fence secured to the ground outside of the run along the perimeter. I personally used dog fencing as that ground protection because it is strong, durable, and the chickens aren't coming in contact with it so they can't get hurt by it. That is what I would suggest.
