Low egg production - it's mice!

We may have an egg eater in our bunch. We have 2 mature roosters, 12 hens and 1 undermined, Soledad. We have been gathering 1 or 2 eggs a day lately. A couple of times, I've found bits of shell in the coop. Several of the girls are molting. Is this the reason? If someone is eating the...

    Solidad!

I so want this Solidad to be a girl. Please say she is! Her mother is a mutt, big silver mix and lays large greenish eggs. Her dad is an Easter Egger. She was hatched June 22nd. What say ye, buds? Duh! I forgot the pic! Coming soon!

    Boy or girl ... hmmm?

This is a product of mutt Rustie and her man, Hunner, a cochin. She lays blue eggs. I hope this is a little girl. She is one month old and is named Solidad. She's the onliest egg that hatched. My dear little banty, Shimmer, is the broody. I have a real challenge to introduce them both back...

    revisiting feather sexing

So, okay, of four eggs placed under my sweet broody, banty Shimmer, only one hatched. She seems to have given up on the other three - and perhaps I should also! I checked this kid's feathers the first day, Tuesday afternoon (only fluffy down), and then again on Wednesday. Of what I could see...

    1st egg - really!

My Agnes laid this egg - it's the one on the left. The middle one is from my girl, Shimmer, who is a banty. The one on the right is Maureen's - she's an EE and has been laying pretty blue eggs for a while. Her eggs are large, maybe extra large. But .... Agnes has outdone them all with this...

    Agnes II

Here's my newest Agnes. She's the orangy one - what breed do you think? Thanks all. Caroline

    Got the egg thief!

My darling Shimmer had sat on her four eggs for almost 3 weeks when they somehow disappeared. I checked in the fridge thinking someone didn't see the marks (including a picture of a chick drawn on each); I looked in the run for evidence of destruction and I quizzed all members of our household...

    The boys don't take turns!

I've got two questions, really. My two roosters go after the same girl and create a stack. Yeah, it's really comical - in fact, once I saw the girl pop out from the bottom. I've no idea what was actually going on! So .... are my eggs being fertilized or what? I'm thinking that the newest...

    Everyone is on the ball!

Today, my DH and I collected 8 eggs from our 8 hens! Everyone, including Maureen (the youngest), delivered as promised! I purchased Maureen as an EE, but she has the classic looks of an Ameraucana. Her egg is the one on the upper left. Could she be Ameraucana or is her egg still too aqua...

    Not a predator - rather a killer!

My neighbors have been losing chickens to a killer that takes the head and leaves the rest. Last night we forgot to close up our girls. I will regret this for a long time. The killer went into the coop, took our Brahma's head and left her dear body. There were feathers everywhere in the...

    Braided rug - what?!

I was inspired by "another braided rug", but wanted an easier method. I found it (though not as pretty as the lovely wool braid). http://littlehouseinthesuburbs.com/2008/11/secrets-of-no-sew-rag-rug.html In my business, I have lots of fabric scraps and bias strips (for pillows, duvets and...

A dress with a chicken theme - what else?!

Hi, crafty ladies - I posted this in the Holiday chicken block swap - I thought you might want to see it. I had two baby showers in one week (great-nieces). I found this wonderful chicken fabric (one of the mommies speaks French) and made baby dresses. Now I'm making my four year old DGD...

A real rooster - at last!

My dear friend, MrsChickendad, suggested I tell the story of Hunner (named by my great-nephew, Hunner). All my girls grew up together without a rooster. Hunner was introduced as a young guy who didn't know he was a he. The girls pecked at him and bullied him. Even when he learned he was a...

    I need a chicken detective

Two of my girls are broody, Sunny and Shimmer. Shimmer is a little banty and I don't want more, so I placed a Wyandotte egg under her marked with today's date. That was about 2:00. At 4:00 or so, I noticed the girls had switched nests, so I checked under Sunny for the egg to return to...

    He doesn't crow

I have a very pretty cochin rooster who is behaving like a rooster - not the romantic kind - just sneaks up and goes for it! Well, he is tame and sweet with me; he makes a little cooing, talking kind of noise, but he doesn't crow. That's okay, but I was curious - do all roosters crow or some not?

    Cushman Motor Scooters

Who among my chicken friends is a member of the Cushman Motor Scooter Club? The national meet is in Sturgis, SD, this next week. We have just arrived and are staying at Mt. Rodney's RV Park. It's a short walk to the city and the meet. If you are here, we will figure out a way to meet. Caroline

do you know B. Cummings, artist?

I have a really sweet print by B. Cummings of three chickens and their chicks. It was probably a water color and is dated '84. I would love to have more and a new one of this one 'cause sun has changed the color. Mine is about postcard size and is copyrighted. Any chicken knowledge on this?

Someone is an EE and is not telling!

I have a Brahma, four Wyandottes and three mutts. Nobody looks like your "classic" EE, but two of my girls are laying blue-green eggs! So pretty! One of the mutts is a black bantam Cochin mix (Shimmer), another is a large silver girl (Sparkle) and the last one is all red (Rustie). So, who do...

    pretty, but what?!

This person has been hanging around for a few days - we are very rural, but my hubby says pigeon. I think dove 'cause there's a horse farm near us that may have hosted a wedding. We're near the beach, but it's not a seagull. Your thoughts, very learned ones?
