I have a gal who's laid 2 eggs/day twice in the past week -- the first is hard-shelled, the second is soft-shelled. She's a cross between RIR and Sussex, and I've attributed it to her being part production hen with a wacked up reproductive system. Keeping an eye on her, but she's otherwise...
Observations:
I have a mixed breed chicken (RIR + Sussex) that laid 2 eggs/day twice in the past week -- both times the first was on the ground, and the second was a soft-shelled egg (which of course she immediately ate). The girls are on layer feed, have free access to calcium (both eggshells &...
Okay, here's an update. I actually did have a nest box connected to the coop accessible from inside, but when I originally built it, it was too small so I blocked it off and provided the outdoor nest boxes. Last week I opened the old small nest box and made it taller. DeeDee started laying in it...
Small coop up off the ground, essentially a roosting room, no room for nests. Not sure what seeing the nest boxes will tell you. There are two stacked atop one another, one is a converted cat litter box (the kind with a top), and the other is a wooden box inside a dog crate.
This year the top...
I have 3 chickens and 2 nest boxes. Of course there's only one BEST nest box (though which one is best changes from year to year!)
She laid her very first egg inside the coop, but laid in the nest box after that, until ... this strange pattern of 2-4 days in a row finding the eggs inside the...
One of my new girls (acquired this past spring) has been laying since the end of September, and occasionally I would find one of her eggs in the coop rather than the nest box. This past week, she's left eggs there 4 days in a row, and my main concern is that the shells often crack when they fall...
Thank you for that link. Learned a lot from that.
It can only be from one of the 2 mature hens I have. Both are 7 years old, one has been laying all spring, the other has only laid 1 shell-less egg this year, but spends time sitting in the nest box a couple of times a week. Logic suggests it...
Today when I cleaned the coop I found these bits in the bedding.
The larger chunk is about 1" to 1-1/4" long (they are sitting on a 1-1/2"x3" roost). Quite firm. Definitely not something weird they may have eaten. They were hanging out in the yard for a while yesterday but there are no berries...
I used to be a member, but apparently I have forgotten the email I used to originally sign up, as I was unable to log back in today. (It's been a while--my current flock of 2 chooks are 7 years old, and it's been 10 years since I first started on this site.)
Glad to be back! Started out 10...
Reviving an old thread here... same issue...
I have two chicks who are about 3 weeks old -- one is growing like gangbusters (9.7 oz yesterday) but the other is small, sleepy, and only weighs 4.4 oz. They were about the same size when I brought them home 2-1/2 wks ago, but the size difference...
