Hi everyone,
I've been lurking in this thread until next year when I'm ready for some HRIR bantams. I just want to chime in on feed though, last night I went to Purina's website. Right now I feed all my birds except chicks Purina Flock Raiser. Feather quality has been great with that feed, as...
Those are not RIR's. Those are production Reds, which are the hatchery version of RIR. If you look at some of the pictures in this thread it is easy to see the difference between Heritage RIR's and Production RIR's. Don't know about butchering, sorry.
Hi everyone,
I am a youth exhibitor, and this past year I actually won Grand Champion in Showmanship. I love my chickens and am getting interested in Heritage breeds. Rhode Islands have really intruged me, and this fall I'm planning on getting a trio or two of bantams to start me off. In the...
Robert,
You mention ordering 2 week old chicks for $8 each. Do you know anyone who will have bantam RIR's available next fall/early winter? I was going to get some from Duane Urch but there's no way I can order 25 chicks. I don't know what I would do with them all. If you could point me in the...
I use 3 x 2 (maybe more, maybe less, don't know for sure) pens for my breeders. Of course, this is only for 2-3 bantams per pen, which is pushing it. I'm not a large scale breeder so it works for me.
ETA: I keep my birds in garage/shop so they are protected from the elements.
Those hens are difinetly production. You can get heritage strains from breeders or order some hatching eggs from someone on here. Producion Reds rarely go broody, however the heritage strains tend too.
Does anyone know where I can purchase 7 SQ rose comb RIR Bantam hatching eggs? Thanks.
ETA: Chicks may be better in my case since my incubator is so small. I'm looking for 8. I *may* be interested in SC Bantams if that is the only thing available, but I would prefer RC Bantams.
I am going to an auction next month, I am going to attempt and get some rose comb HRIR Bantams while I'm there. Hopefully someone will be bringing some to sell, I don't think there is many breeders within OR and WA.
Hi all- I never got my RIR's yesterday, Duane Urch only shipped the mixed bag chicks. However, there was one in there that they told me *might* be an RIR... But I don't think it is, looks more like a MGB. Here are some pics:
LMAO. My bad. Never was good at math, lol. When I get them, they will be 3 or so days old, in the mail. I hope they all make it through shipping. So I guess I won't be showing them until August. Fine by me, plenty of time for them to look nicer and for me to condition them. I hope I end up with...
Does anyone think that my Bantams RIR's, coming at the end of January, would be okay to show at the end of April? That's 4 months, which, according to my friend (who is a certified judge). Is the age in which you can show birds, but she also said it depends on how fast and well they mature and...
I can't wait for them. They are coming at the end of next month. I will be showing them *maybe* in May, but for sure in August and October. I'm anxious to see how they do in the show room.
I'm getting mine from Duane Urch. I've heard he has some pretty nice RIR's. He breeds both LF RIR in S.C. and R.C., and RIW LF R.C. He only breeds RIR's in Bantams, but in S.C. and R.C. If they don't turn out as nice as I'd like them (I'm getting chicks). Then I'll probably order from a RIR breeder.
Right now, on the Wyandotte thread, people have been discussing fertilization issues with cocks and cockerels in Wyandottes caused by the rose comb. I was wondering if anyone has found any issues similar to this in rose comb RIR's?
What would be an ideal breeding pen for Bantam RIR's? I have a 6 x 6 currently, which would hold 18 Bantams, but I am considering dividing it in half so each half is 6 x 3. Would that be okay? Or would the whole 6 x 6 be the better deal for RIR'S?
